The University of Winnipeg

Field House

The UWinnipeg Multi-Purpose Field House, Health and Wellness Complex - construction slated to begin Spring 2012 with completion in Fall 2013.

The University of Winnipeg has received funding for the construction of a Field House that includes a multi-purpose sport playing surface, Health and Wellness Centre, and a Lifespan Physical Activity Research Institute. The facility will be connected to, and integrated with, the current Duckworth Centre building and Bill Wedlake Fitness Centre on Spence Street. The Field House will provide a venue for teaching, research, and programming in physical activity and team and individual sport that will benefit University students, faculty, staff, the inner-city community and all Winnipeggers. The Field House planning is based on the following principles:

 • the building will be utilized as a multi-sport facility, including both intramural and competitive team and individual field sports

• all physical activity and sport programs will draw upon University expertise, in particular, the new Faculty of Kinesiology

• the planning and construction of the Field House will have user-driven input, including that from University students, staff, and faculty, as well as sport organizations, and the inner-city community

• programs within the Field House will be developmentally appropriate and instructionally-based, utilizing a unique bottom-up or grass roots approach, rather than a top-down approach

• the facility will serve the teaching needs of the new Faculty of Kinesiology including instruction and storage

• the Field House facility will offer programs that are inclusive, accessible to diverse populations and interests, and designed for maximum participation. It is, in the truest sense, a facility that embodies the United Nations concept of Sport For All
