Leona Fitzpatrick

Quilt Name:
Pathway to Light (60" x 60")

Leona FitzpatrickInspiration:
The Pathway to Light quilt was the outcome of my June 2008 visit, with Marjorie Anderson, to Marilyn Stewart Stothers’ art quilt gallery, and a walk through the Carol Shields’ Labyrinth.  The garden-like maze from Larry’s Party confirmed the inspiration.  The quilt’s pathway, comprised of 2809 small squares, reflects the Labyrinth’s residual autumn browns of wild grasses and dried foliage, which are transformed into the mottled greens of spring, under the warm spring sun.  The journey to the lighter coloured centre is intended to generate an increasing sense of warmth and tranquillity as one makes one’s way to the heart of the maze.

Quilt Name: Timeless (24" x 24")

Timeless quilt by Leona FitzpatrickInspiration:
This quilt is an adaptation of a workshop entitled "Green Party Dress" by Heather Lair

Bio:

Leona started quilting in 2002 after a 28-year career at HSC as a laboratory technologist.  Her quilting passion began with a spontaneous purchase of a quilting book in Banff.   She has taken numerous workshops and attended local quilt shows.  Traditional quilting and hand applique are present on many of her baby quilts for her 4 grandchildren.  Currently original design, colour exploration, embellishments, and multi textiles are of interest. “Pathway to Light” has provided an opportunity to deviate from traditional quilting and express individualism through original design and colour.  Leona lives with her husband of 38 years, David, and two cats.

Ramona Mattix

Quilt Name:
Mermaid as Muse – Ocean Inspiration  (67" x 75")

Mermaids as Muse - Ocean InspirationInspiration:
Carol Shields collected mermaids.  I tied this to her belief that following convention can hamper a writer (or artist) and the result is an art quilt created with various techniques – discharge dyeing, fusing, embroidery, piecing, thread painting dimensional cloth – along with unconventional materials, metallic threads and fabrics, paint sticks, Angelina fiber, beads.  The quilt reflects a sparkling underwater world where the mermaid reigns.

Bio:

Ramona has been a quilter for 25 years.  Her work ranges from simple baby quilts, conventional pieced quilts, to art quilts of her own construction and design.  She has lived in Montana, Hawaii and Arizona and currently calls Nelson, BC home.  In her day job, she is the Director of Development Services for the Regional District of Central Kootenay and has a MA in Community and Regional Planning from UBC.  She lives with her husband, Paul and dog, Duffy.
