Where Access Matters

Since it was established as Wesley College in the late 19th Century, access to education has been at the core of The University of Winnipeg mission. Whether it is overcoming financial, cultural or socio-economic factors, UWinnipeg is committed to supporting students from all backgrounds and circumstances, and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

The Opportunity Fund is unique in Canada in providing access to education. The initiative allows youth to dream big about obtaining a post-secondary education. It is comprised of three components: fast-track bursaries, tuition credit accounts for children and youth, and start-up financing for student and community entrepreneurs.

Through a variety of academic programs and student supports for university students, combined with community learning initiatives for future students at both the elementary and high-school level as well as adult learners, the University is committed to using all of the resources at its disposal to close the graduation gap that exists for these demographic groups.

Student Awards

The University of Winnipeg is one the best schools in Canada for obtaining undergraduate student awards. In particular, entrance scholarships, continuing student scholarships, bursaries and awards from outside agencies & organizations are popular.

Community Learning

Over the past five years, the University of Winnipeg has developed a strong community learning foundation designed to support children and young adults from low-income, disadvantaged backgrounds (primarily Aboriginal and new Canadian) to gain motivation, skills and financial resources towards pursuing pathways into higher education.

Aboriginal Education

The University of Winnipeg takes pride in being an accessible, community based institution. Approximately 10 per cent of the 9,200 students at the University self-identify as First Nations, Métis and Inuit, making UWinnipeg one of the top four universities in the country for Aboriginal participation.

Aboriginal Student Services Centre

Starting something new is always a bit overwhelming at first. That's why we've created the Aboriginal Student Services Centre (ASSC) and have put together a number of support services to help make you feel more at home.
