2011 June Intensive Student Handbook






For more than thirty years, The University of Winnipeg has offered international students a variety of English as an Additional Language (EAL) programs. The June Intensive Program is a five-week program that offers:

  • classes that are interesting, practical, and fun
  • high academic standards
  • skilled and supportive instructors
  • opportunities to experience the culture and lifestyle of Winnipeg
  • opportunities to form lasting friendships

The Core Component:

Students participate in the core component from Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Students are placed in a class that reflects their level of ability and competence in the English language.

Morning classes focus on developing skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Afternoon classes are reserved for practice, practical workshops, and conversation classes.

Core Component Features:
  • placement test to determine which class is the most appropriate for you
  • small, friendly classes,
  • practical and effective classroom lessons and workshops
  • personalize and professional instruction
  • final grade and transcript

The Socio-Cultural Component:

Students benefit from their participation in scheduled social activities. These could include a trip to a baseball game, a tour of the museum, an evening playing sports in the park, or an outing to a festival. There are three weekly evening activities planned and also one on Friday afternoon. It is a great way to experience Winnipeg and build friendships!

Socio-Cultural Component Features:
  • share evening meals and participate in informal conversations in English
  • experience local restaurants and partake in summer festivals, sporting events, and the arts
