Internationally Educated IT Professionals Program (IEITP)
Beginning in June 2010, The University of Winnipeg piloted a bridge/ gap training program for Internationally Educated IT Professionals. The first offering of this program is to be completed by July 2011.
The IEITP program combines language (English for Specific Purposes) and workplace culture training, education through University of Winnipeg courses, and a bridge-to-work component for participants to lessen gaps in their current language skill set and education. The goal is to help participants obtain successful employment within an IT position in which they have commensurate skills.
An additional component of the IEITP program is the WorkIT program offered by ICTAM (Information and Communication Technologies Association of Manitoba). Participants will complete all six modules as well as attend workshops throughout the bridging program.
Requirements to enter the program included:
- Canadian Language Benchmark of 7 or higher (some exceptions)
- University of Winnipeg ESP & Undergraduate requirements met
- Proof of Profession (Degree, diploma, certificate) and IT work experience
- Unemployed or underemployed in IT field
- Clearly articulated career goal in IT sector
- Ability to enter a full-time study program
Below are some quotes from participants in the 2010/2011 program:
"Although I have more than 10 years working experience in the
IT field and education background of MBA and computer science in my home
country, the lack of Canadian working experience and Canadian education
background made it difficult for me to find a job. The gap was there. Fortunately, I got accepted by IT Bridge Program at University of Winnipeg. This program provides me with one
year of support to update my knowledge and get familiar with workplace culture.
I will never forget the people who helped me. Right
now my study is almost done. I will start looking for a job with the confidence
I gained through the one year study. For my future career development, I also plan
to continue my coursework and acquire my CMA designation in the near future. Move
forward or stay in place, it is our choice.
Xueshan (Senior Business Analyst)

"As an IEITP (Internationally Educated IT Professional) I attended English for IT professionals and academic writing classes for two months. By the end of those courses, I was more confident to reach my goals and be successful. After finishing these classes I was enrolled in some courses to update my knowledge and skills. Also, I attended some counseling workshops to improve my academic skills provided by the counseling department at The University of Winnipeg. Now, I am pursuing my courses and other program components. I would like to say thanks to all the staff at the University who are working with us to reach our goals."
Parminder (Internet Systems Specialist)

"The Canadian workforce involves a complexity of factors where your prospect of success is directly proportional to your level of education, especially also if your education is from Canada. Today, with support and encouragement of the government as well as The University of Winnipeg I am one of the participants in the IEITP program. My confidence and my ability to find and secure a job is already 'written in stone.' "
