English for Academic Purposes
University Preparation Program for Newcomers
In partnership with the Global Welcome
Centre of The University of Winnipeg we have created a program that gives
newcomers the best possible start in their academic journey, English for Academic Purposes.This program consists of courses that are designed
especially for individuals whose first language is not English who wish to
attend a post secondary institution in the future .
We offer the following courses for Academic Purposes:
- English for Academic Writing ( Part I and II)
- English for Academic Learning and Speaking ( please note that this course consists of two parts)
English for Academic Writing I and II
This is an advanced writing course for academic purposes. It focuses on the development of academic writing skills needed to succeed in an undergraduate, post-secondary context. Skills and topics include:
The writing process
Paraphrasing & summarizing academic texts.
Comprehending and critically analyzing academic texts
Independently formulating thesis statements and develop complete essays on a variety of topics
Writing grammatically correct essays which demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the topic
Documenting sources using APA style guidelines
Using appropriate academic vocabulary in writing
A student who successfully completes both sections of English for Academic Writing with a minimum of C+ meets the language requirement of UW and will receive three unallocated credits towards a UW degree or diploma.

English for Academic Learning and Speaking
This is an advanced level speaking and listening course for academic purposes. This class will develop students English language skills while building the study, technology, critical thinking and meta-cognitive skills needed to thrive in a university environment. The class is broken into two twelve-week segments: English for Academic Learning and English for Academic Speaking. Students may enter the course at the beginning of either component.
Skills and topics include:
Understanding the format and structure of lectures
Actively listening to lectures and taking notes
Understanding and using academic vocabulary
Using study strategies
Comprehending and critically analyzing academic texts
Giving a formal and informal presentation
Discussing and debating on academic topics
Using academic sources
The Canadian culture of a post-secondary context

Mondays and Wednesdays
6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Please note that this course divided into
two sections: Academic Learning and Academic Speaking. The spring session
starts with Academic Learning.
