Online ESL  Teacher Certificate Program

The University of Winnipeg is very pleased to be offering the ESL Teacher Certificate Program (ESL TCP) in a new online format. This will make this program more accessible to students both locally and internationally. To ensure quality of programming, the syllabus has been designed to meet the standards of TESL Canada, the national accrediting body for ESL teacher education.

The Online ESL TCP is comprised of the following:

  • 120 hours of TESL theory and methodology which includes the following courses:

    • Course #1 : Thinking about Theory: A Framework for EAL Instruction

    • Course #2: Understanding the Language Classroom: Procedures for Effective Teaching

    • Course #3: Developing the Language System: Teaching Grammar and Vocabulary
      Note: Pre-requisites are course #1 and course #2.

    • Course #4: Developing the Language Skills: Teaching Second Language Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.
      Note: Pre-requisites are course #1 and course #2.
  • 20 hour ESL practicum, which includes:

    •  10 hours of EAL classroom observation in an EAL class in Winnipeg

    • 10 hours supervised practicum in an EAL class in Winnipeg

Course must be completed following a specific course schedule. While most tasks are completed independently and at a learner's own pace, students must follow the general course progression of 1 module/week for the course of 10 weeks.


Please note: Course are offered on a rotational basis, and are all subject to minimum enrollment.
