Honours Program

The Honours Program in Economics at the University of Winnipeg is designed to provide a liberal arts education with an emphasis on modern economic analysis. It is designed to prepare students for careers using economic analysis as well as to provide a foundation for advanced research in economics.

The recommended course sequence for the 4-year BA Honours program is as follows:
 

  • Intro to Microeconomics and Intro to Macroeconomics (3+3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Calculus (6 credit hours)
  • Other courses that meet the requirements for the BA(Hons) degree.

  • Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics (3+3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Mathematical Economics (3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Statistical Analysis (6 credit hours)
  • Other courses that meet the requirements for the BA(Hons) degree.

 

  • Microeconomics (Honours) (3 credit hours)
  • Macroeconomics (Honours) (3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Econometrics (3 credit hours)
  • Perhaps one other full course at the Honours level, plus other courses that meet the requirements for the BA(Hons) degree.

 

  • Advanced Microeconomics (Honours) (3 credit hours)
  • Advanced Macroeconomics (Honours) (3 credit hours)
  • Problems in Econometrics (Honours) (3 credit hours)
  • Remaining honours requirements (30 credit hours in Economics at the Honours level (4000) level required for a degree), plus remaining courses that meet the requirements for the BA(Hons) degree.

Graduates of the Honours program choose to pursue Graduate work in Economics, a professional degree in Law or Business, or find employment related to their studies. In recent years, BA(Hons) graduates have received scholarships and other financial support to pursue graduate work in Economics at the following universities.

 

Applying to Graduate School

The recommended approach for applying to graduate school is as follows.

  1. Prior to the fall term, or early in the fall term, contact the graduate schools you are considering and ask for an application package.

  2. After the first term fall grades are determined, approach faculty members who you would like to provide letters of reference.

  3. Discuss the relative merits of the graduate schools you are considering with faculty members or former students.

  4. Ensure your request for letters of reference are given to faculty members early enough to meet the application deadlines. For Canadian schools, scholarship deadlines may be as early as February 1st. For American schools, the deadlines are even earlier, often in December or January. American schools require a score from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) before a decision is made regarding admittance or financial aid. Contact an academic advisor regarding dates of the GRE. An important note regarding U.S. schools is that they often require a non-refundable application fee (approximately $50.00 US)

  5. Once your application has been evaluated at the respective schools, you may want to further discuss your options with faculty members, or other students.


Graduate School Recommendation Letter Requests

If you are a current or former UW undergraduate student and wish a Professor to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf, please give the following

To The Professor

  • A list of schools to which you are applying, and due-dates, with the earliest due-date at the top
  • An unofficial copy of your transcript (to be sure the letter doesn't conflict with your abilities as reflected by your grades),
  • Recommendation forms from the schools you are applying to (with the applicant portion filled-in),
  • A copy of your resume.
  • Information on how to get in touch with you in case they need to reach you (email, cell phone)
  • Any other information that is relevant

  • A list of the MAILING ADDRESSES to send forms and letters directly back to the schools (note any letters that you will pick up to send in with your application package)
