James Currie

Dr. James Currie

Currie completed his Ph.Dwork in Mathematics at the University of Calgary in 1987 at the age of 25. After one year as a visiting professor at Dalhousie University, he joined UWinnipeg in 1988. His research has been funded continuously by NSERC for the last 20 years and he has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. In 2008, he received the University's Erica & Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship. In 2009, along with NaradRampersad and Michael Rao, he announced the solution of the long-standing mathematical problem Dejean's Conjecture. On the teaching front, one focus for Currie has been the use of history to teach mathematics to non-scientists. He has been listed more than once on Maclean's magazine's list of 'popular profs'.

Currie served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1999-2004, and for 2009-2010, becoming Associate Dean of Science in November 2010. He became Acting Dean in June 2011 and has been Dean of Science since March 2012.
