The 2009 CCDAHSS at UWinnipeg
Tracy Whalen
Tracy Whalen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications, where she teaches such courses as Visual Rhetoric, Oral Communications, and Rhetorical Criticism. Formerly President of the Canadian Society for the Study of Rhetoric, Dr. Whalen draws upon rhetorical theory to discuss both literary and non-literary texts, especially as they pertain to "place": textbooks, tourism advertising, novelistic prose, artist statements and, currently, the place of "the rant" in Canadian discourse. She has most recently written about stylistic intensity in the work of Newfoundland writer Lisa Moore and is currently researching "gesture and touch" in the public sphere, specifically the dynamics of touch and restraint in the Oka Standoff picture.
