This course traces Polish history since its founding in 966 to the present. It discusses the emergence of the unique Noble Democracy of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that encompassed Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine, and its decline and fall in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Tracing the struggles to create a democracy between the two world wars and under communist rule, the course shows the emergence of Solidarity and other democratic opposition forces that finally created the contemporary Polish state.
