While many Greek and Roman artists served the state and their cities, other artists produced articles of great beauty and taste for individual citizens. We shall attempt to place these articles, which include jewellery, pottery, glass, decorative mosaics, frescoes, portraits, and a variety of artefacts in terracotta, bronze, silver and gold, in the contexts of the houses, mansions and palaces for which they were produced.
