Opera 101

Are you new to opera, or do you want to know more about it? This is the course for you! Instructor Don Anderson takes you through an absorbing and entertaining survey of its 400-year history. You’ll hear and watch excerpts from more than 75 operas, performed by the greatest singers of the past 60 years – everyone from Joan Sutherland and Jussi Björling to Luciano Pavarotti and Cecilia Bartoli. Don offers fascinating information on opera’s development, and background anecdotes on its major composers. The course includes video presentations of two complete operas: Puccini’s La bohème (featuring Luciano Pavarotti), and Elektra by Strauss (featuring Birgit Nilsson), plus two feature-length documentaries by the internationally acclaimed British film maker, Tony Palmer. They profile the celebrated sopranos Maria Callas and Renée Fleming.
