Western Esotericism -
Heretical Movements and Secret Societies
Join Frank Albo, visiting lecturer from the University of Cambridge, University of Winnipeg Alumni and specialist in western esoteric ideas as he explores the history of Western Esotericism from the "hermetic sciences" of the Renaissance, 18th century secret societies such as Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, and the Illuminati, to the occult revival of the late 19th and early 20th centuries through exponents Eliphas Lévi, H. P. Blavatsky, and Aleister Crowley.
The course includes readings from Marsilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola, Cornelius Agrippa, Giordano Bruno, and John Dee.
Also examined is the cultural, literary, philosophical, and religious influence of esotericism, including the contemporary success of novels and films such as The Da Vinci Code, the Golden Compass, and conclude by touring the esoteric designs of the Manitoba Legislative Building.
