Aboriginal Management Certificate Program
**This program is only available on a contract basis**
This program is designed to provide individuals with the skills, knowledge and awareness required for positions in management. Participants will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of current business management and of traditional leadership in order to deal with the complex issues facing Aboriginal communities and organizations today.
Graduates will be prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of Aboriginal communities as they pursue and develop processes for effective self-reliance. Excellent communication and decision-making capabilities will provide students with current knowledge and professional skills that are needed for a career in leadership.
THIS PROGRAM IS FOR INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN:
- Awareness of Aboriginal history and culture
- Developing their leadership capacity

- Recruitment and retention of Aboriginal employees
- Workforce development and diversity
UPON COMPLETION OF THIS PROGRAM YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- Demonstrate awareness of and ability to manage the diverse and complex issues facing Aboriginal governments and communities
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to be successful in management positions
- Describe aspects of the history and culture of Aboriginal people in Canada
- Explain key concepts of organizational behaviour and the behaviour of individuals and groups in organizations
- Utilize effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
Aboriginal Management Certificate Requirements
The program consists of three components, the Core and Elective courses, and Professional Edge Seminars.
To Graduate You Must:
1. Complete all six Core courses (219 hours):
- Learning Techniques Seminar (3 hours)
- Aboriginal History and Culture (36 hours)
- Business Fundamentals (36 hours)
- Effective Oral Communication (36 hours)
- Effective Written Communication (36 hours)
- Management for Aboriginal Communities (36 hours)
- Organizational Behaviour (36 hours)
2. Complete one Elective course from the following (36 hours):
- Contemporary Aboriginal Issues (36 hours)
- Developing Effective Aboriginal Employment Strategies (36 hours)
3. Complete five Professional Edge Seminars (35 hours):
Complete five one-day seminars (7 hours) or a combination of one and two day seminars
(14 hours) for a total of 35 hours.
Graduates of the Aboriginal Management Certificate Program may be eligible for up to 12 hours of equivalent course credits toward an undergraduate degree at The University of Winnipeg.
