The first objective of the course is to introduce the concept of the relationship of mind, brain and body and to explain some of the psychological approaches that promote health and well-being. Most important, we shall begin to look at the trait – mindfulness – that is strongly associated with reduced stress, enhanced daily life, and resilience. Mindfulness is a way of being, characterized by calm and accepting awareness of the present moment including one’s physical body functions (e.g., the breath), feelings, thoughts, content of consciousness or consciousness itself and the building of compassion.

The second and major objective of the course is to take advantage of the fact that mindfulness can be nurtured. The bulk of the course involves a cultivation of meditative practices developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts that assist participants to reduce stress, promote calm and well-being, enhance physical health, and develop perspective and resilience. In this way, participants, having been introduced to the relationship of mind, brain, and body, will spend the bulk of the course developing a more mindful approach to life.
