Guest Speaker: Michael D. Mehta
January 5: Technologies for a sustainable 21st Century
Dr. Mehta will explore some of the most promising technologies of the 21st
Century, and examine them in terms of their social, environmental and economic
sustainability. He will focus on advances in nanotechnology, tidal energy, sea
water desalination, and alternative waste water management systems.
Jan 12: Understanding risk in a turbulent world
Dr. Mehta will unpack the complex science of risk. By examining risk
perceptions, assessments, and management, he will provide a tool for
understanding some of the most complex risk issues of our times.
Jan 19: Impacts of technology on society: Case study - biotechnology
Dr. Mehta will examine how advances in biotechnology pose unique challenges. He
will focus on genetically modified foods and regenerative medicine to
demonstrate the wide range of social, ethical and legal issues that emerge when
new and powerful technologies like these are released with poor government
oversight, lack of labelling, and a failure to understand the non-scientific
side of the equation.
