This course analyzes the evolution of rock ‘n’ roll as a cultural phenomenon in the latter half of the 20th Century. Topics include the origins and roots of rock ‘n’ roll; the characteristics of 50s and 60s pre-Beatles rock music; the impact of the Beatles and the British Invasion; the American response to the British Invasion; and the fragmentation of rock music.  The course will also examine the evolution of the music business and how technology has altered the landscape of popular music.
