Ms. Pawa Haiyupis
Ms.
Haiyupis is Ahousaht from the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Currently, she resides in the Lower
Mainland, BC and is working for the NCFNG as the BC Region, Leadership Programs
Coordinator.
Ms.
Haiyupis completed a four-year First Nations Studies Program at Malaspina University
in Nanaimo, BC. The focus of her studies was on
Traditional Ecological Knowledge, First Nations governance and Environmental
studies. She has a diversity of work experience with First Nations people and
the environment.
Ms.
Haiyupis was a field researcher for wildlife inventories as well as a cultural
resource technician in Clayoquot Sound. Pawa also worked with the Long Beach Model Forest
on the ‘Hahulthi Project’ interviewing 25 Hereditary Chiefs and Elders about
traditional Nuu-chah-nulth systems of governance as well as traditional
resource management.
In 2003
Ms. Haiyupis co-founded the BC First Nations Youth Caucus and she continues to
volunteer her time working with her peers on various BC First Nations emerging
leadership initiatives inviting government and organizations to include youth
in meaningful decision-making processes. She worked with the BC Assembly of
First Nations as their Youth Coordinator on the Building Our Legacy Together (BOLT)
project. Her role was to recruit emerging leaders to participate in the Joint
Policy and Planning development forums as well as coordinating BOLT Youth
Forums.
Ms. Haiyupis has also worked with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) in their Fisheries Department as a Program Manager in Training. Her work with the NTC focused on planning and coordinating the Council of Ha’wiih (Nuu-chah-nulth Hereditary Chiefs) as well as liaising with lawyers and communities in preparation for the Nuu-chah-nulth Fisheries Litigation. Ms. Haiyupis is excited to be working with the NCFNG and she truly believes in their guiding tagline “Creating a new memory in the minds of our children”.
