WINNIPEG, MB - Ninety years ago 30,000 men and women left their jobs to protest for better wages, and the improvement of their working conditions. The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history.

On May 12, 2009, Patrick McGuire will guide a bus tour, seminar and film dedicated to the strike. Patrick McGuire is a University of Winnipeg alumnus, a high-school history teacher at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate and a sessional instructor in the University of Manitoba's Labour Studies Program.

Sites on the tour will include the CPR station on Higgins Avenue, the Ukrainian Labour Temple, neighbourhoods in the North End, River Heights, Wolseley and City Hall.

The tour will give participants an understanding of the context and historical significance of the strike and its lasting impact on Canadian society.
