Messages of support for life-long learning
Education is freedom
!
The freedom to express yourself; the freedom to dream; the freedom to make your own choices; the freedom to escape from poverty, violence and fear.
Everyday I work with adult immigrants and refugees who have come to Canada in search of a better life. Helping these students gain access to higher education is for them a step toward that ultimate goal. It is reciprocal: I help them on their journey and they inspire me.

I have always been inspired by learning.
Learning one thing makes me feel like I can learn more, and helps me to grow and contribute to my workplace, my family, and my community. I am fortunate that my workplace is an institution of higher learning, so there are many opportunities for learning all around me. International Adult Learners Week highlights those (and other) opportunities, and highlights all the wonderful benefits that learning brings to everyone.

My adult educational experiences have affirmed my belief that I am a capable learner.
Once you firmly incorporate this idea of being a learner into your self-concept, you cant help but feel more optimistic about your life.
After all, if you are capable of learning, you can adapt to new circumstances. You begin to think, for example, that you can learn your way out of just about any situation that comes along.

What was potentially an intimidating concept after being away from university for over 15 years has become exhilarating and fun.
As a single mom of two and a full time employee, going back to school for upgrades can be a challenge. The opportunities presented by the Continuing Education Department at the University of Winnipeg made going back to school more accessible.
The instructors have been supportive and the diversity in the classroom refreshing. The upgrades I have taken have helped me immensely in my position, and I look forward to finishing my certificate this spring.

As life-long learners, we have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience.
We are constantly being transformed through discovery, engagement, and critical reflection. I am reminded of the words of American educator, John Holt: Real learning is a process of discovery, and if we want it to happen, we must create the kinds of conditions in which discoveries are made. We know what these are. They include time, leisure, freedom, and lack of pressure.

Learning enriches my mind, body and soul.
Over the years as an adult, I have immersed myself in learning. Learning is a continuum and what I learn in my formal studies builds on my everyday learning and vice versa. One informs the other.
The adult learners I serve are an inspiration to me. Assisting them reach their educational goals makes my day!
