Dan Hurley - Biography
Dan Hurley is Associate Vice-President (External Affairs) of The University of Winnipeg. In this role, he is responsible for the University's External Affairs department, which includes Marketing & Communications, Conferences & Events, Alumni Affairs and University Advancement. He is leading the University's marketing, branding, social media and alumni engagement strategies. He serves as senior editor and publisher of university publications including the University of Winnipeg Journal and the annual Report to the Community. Dan regularly represents the University at public functions, and serves as master of ceremonies at media conferences and other special events, as well as media spokesperson. In addition, he is the principal liaison with The University of Winnipeg Foundation on the “A World of Opportunity” Capital Campaign, and annual giving strategy and communications.
From 2008-2011, Dan served as Senior Executive Officer and Advisor to the President, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, where he provided strategic advice and support to the President and the University's senior executive on key issues and priorities during a period of significant campus and academic renewal. He also managed the President's Office, while also overseeing the External Affairs department.
Prior to returning to UWinnipeg in 2006, Dan worked in both government and the media in Ottawa for more than a decade. On Parliament Hill, he served as chief of staff to Canada's Minister of the Environment and in senior advisory positions for the ministers of Western Economic Diversification and Intergovernmental Affairs, as well as for several MPs. He has also worked as a reporter and associate producer for CBC Radio Ottawa, as a researcher for Canadian Geographic magazine, and as a public affairs officer for Cadets Canada.
A proud UWinnipeg alumnus (Class of 1993), Dan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Canadian Studies. As a student, he was active in campus politics and spent many days (and nights) working in the newsroom at The Uniter. He is also a graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa where he earned a Master of Journalism degree in 2000.

Dan and his wife, Kim, are proud parents with one child. They love the outdoors and traveling, especially when a sailboat is involved.
