The 2006 University of Winnipeg High School Girl’s Volleyball Tournament took place this past Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. The tournament featured 20 of the top high school girl’s teams from across Winnipeg and Manitoba. For the fourth year in a row the team from Lord Selkirk, coached by Wesmen women’s assistant coach Rick Scott captured the gold medal by defeating Vincent Massey (Brandon) in the gold medal match. The team from Vincent Massey (Winnipeg) took home the bronze medal. The MVP of the tournament for the second consecutive year was Jill Sawatzky of Lord Selkirk.
The 27th Annual University of Winnipeg Volleyball Coaching Seminar took place this past Friday at the Duckworth Centre. Over 110 volleyball coaches from across the city took in the informative and captivating day long seminar. Melanie Sanford, head coach of the University of Regina Women’s Volleyball Team was the feature presenter along with several top coaches from across the province.
The annual Wesmen Invitational Varsity Boys Volleyball Tournament will be taking place this Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. The tournament will feature 20 high school varsity teams from across the city.
WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen once again held their annual Wesmen Sports Camps this past summer. A record number of participants (close to 900) took part in the basketball and volleyball sessions. The Wesmen players served as coaches in the camp sessions and they all did a fantastic job with the youth all summer long. For the first time ever the Winnipeg Wesmen along with the Wii Chiwaakanek Learning Centre held a two week sports camp for 21 youth in the community. The youth took part in volleyball, basketball and traditional games in the two week session.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Wesmen Men’s Basketball Coach Dave Crook is currently putting his players thru training camp in preparation for the upcoming 2006-07 season. The team features 10 returning players as well as four recruits and a few walk on hopefuls who will be looking to crack the final roster. The team will continue to practice daily in order to allow Coach Crook to decide his final roster.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay held the teams training camp this past week. The camp featured eight players from last season’s team as well as five first year Wesmen players who will be looking to crack the line-up. The team will continue their practices this week in preparation for the upcoming pre-season schedule.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Wesmen Men’s Head Coach Larry McKay is conducting his team’s training camp for the upcoming 2006-07 season. The camp features 10 returning players and five impressive recruits who will be looking to make the team this season. The team will participate in the annual inter-squad match this Wednesday evening.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Wesmen Women’s Head Coach Diane Scott is putting her 2006-07 team thru their paces. The team will feature eight players from last year’s team returning as well as five first year players. The team will get a chance to impress Coach Scott at the annual inter-squad match this Wednesday.
