WESMEN WOMEN’S VOLLEBALL PROGRAM ANNOUNCE 2006 RECRUITING CLASS
Winnipeg, May 1, 2006 - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Diane Scott are pleased to announce the commitment of the following players who will be joining the University of Winnipeg Women’s Volleyball program in September.
Kirsten Lawson, 5’11" middle blocker/ rightside, Neelin High School (Brandon,Manitoba)
In 2005 she was a member of the U 17 Volleyball Provincial Team. In 2004-05 Kirsten was named the Wheat City Journal Female Athlete of the Year and the Neelin High School Female Athlete of the Year. A multi-sport athlete, Kirsten was a member of the 2006 AAA Basketball Championship team. Kirsten is also a strong student with a current average of 85% at Neelin High School. She is presently serving as Student Council Social Convenor. In 2005 Kirsten was a volunteer at the Western Canadian Special Olympic Games.
"We are delighted that Kirsten has made the decision to join our program. A gifted all-round high school athlete, Kirsten has proven she can play with the best. We feel Kirsten still has a huge upside with volleyball", Diane Scott, U of W Women’s Volleyball Head Coach.
Brianne Collette, 5’11" middle blocker, College Jeanne Sauvé.
A member of the 2006 Jr.Wesmen U18 team. She was a member of the 2005 AAAA Provincial Finalist with College Jeanne Sauve. A participant in the 2005 French Canadian Games held in Winnipeg. Named 2004-05 College Jeanne Sauvé Athlete of the Year. Brianne teamed up with her sister Genevieve to capture the 2004 SCAC Badminton Doubles Championship. A very good student in the classroom with an overall average of 90%.
"As a member of our Jr.Wesmen program, Brianne was given an opportunity to play a bigger role as a leader and go to player. With a summer of physical training to get her prepared for university volleyball, Brianne competitive attitude will have her fit in right away", stated Diane Scott.
Genevieve Collette, 5’10" rightside/leftside, College Jeanne Sauvé.
Another member of the 2006 Jr.Wesmen U18 team. Also a member of the 2005 AAAA Provincial Finalists with College Jeanne Sauvé. Finalists for Team Manitoba at the 2005 French Canadian Games held in Winnipeg. Genevieve participated in the 2004 Final Four AAAA Provincial Volleyball Championships. In 2004 she teamed up with her sister Brianne to win the SCAC Badminton Doubles Championship. An exceptional student with an overall average of 90%, she was recently awarded the Prix du Directeur prize for academic excellence.
"As competitive as her sister, Gene brings a flexible, dynamic to the court, being able to play left or right side. Gene’s tough serving and versatile play will be a great addition to our line up", added Diane Scott.
Brooklyn Brunel, 5’10" rightside, College Jeanne Sauvé.
Finalists at the 2005 AAAA Provincials where she received the Players Choice Award. Participated in the 2004 AAAA Provincial Final Four Championship Brooklyn was named as the College Jeanne Sauvé Athlete of the Year in 2004. A member of 16 and under National Championship team in 2004 and the 15 and under National Championship squad in 2003. A multi-sport athlete Brooklyn captured first place in the high jump competition at the Louis Riel School Division Track and Field Meet. She is currently on the Senior 4 Honor Roll with an overall average of 84%.
"Brooklyn is an all-round athlete who has proven that she is tougher then she looks. The third member of the College Jeanne Sauvé Provincial AAAA Girls Volleyball Finalist to join our program this fall, Brooklyn brings experience, calmness and depth to our program. Brooklyn will only get better with some physical training and the opportunity to improve", noted Diane Scott.
Kaitlyn Lewis, 5’10" leftside, Westgate Mennonite Collegiate.
Named a MHSAA Volleyball Graduating All-Star. Kaitlyn was named an All-Star at the Pembina Trails, Top Eight Debate and St.Vital Invitational Volleyball Tournaments. She was also a member of the Manitoba Provincial Team in Grades 10 & 11. A hard working student with an overall average of 83%.
"A dynamic player out of Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, Kaitlyn has proven her athleticism and versatility on the floor. Kaitlyn brings a raw talent with tons of potential, her timing could be just right", said Scott.
