FORMER WESMEN STAR TO REPRESENT CANADA AT PAN AMERICAN GAMES

Wednesday, July 11, 2007 – The University of Winnipeg along with Basketball Canada are pleased to announce that former Wesmen Women’s basketball star Uzoma Asagwara has been named to Canada’s Senior Women’s Basketball Team that will be taking part in the upcoming Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro,  Brazil from July 20-24, 2007.

Asagwara, recently completed her fifth and final year of university basketball leading the CIS in scoring with 28.05 points per game. It is the second consecutive year Asagwara has led the nation in scoring. Last season her scoring average was 24.5 points per game. The 5’9” guard from St.Norbert Collegiate was named a second team All-Canadian as well as earning a spot on the Canada West Conference First All-Star Team. A team co-captain this past season, Asagwara played a big part in leading the Wesmen to a 14-8 regular season record and first place in the Great Plains Division. She was named both Canada West and CIS Female Athlete of the Week (week ending January 7, 2007) when she scored 61 points in a pivotal two game series against the University of Manitoba Bisons. She was named University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Week five times during the 2006-07 season. She has been named an Academic All-Canadian all five of her years at the University of Winnipeg. Asagwara was honoured as the University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Year in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

This will mark the beginning of a busy summer as they will participate in a four-team exhibition tournament in August and the FIBA Olympic Qualifier Tournament in September.

Team Canada will tip-off against Mexico on Friday, July 20 at 2:30 pm EST. Their next game will be on Saturday, July 21 against Jamaica at 9:00 pm EST, and will finish off the preliminary round against host Brazil on Sunday, July 22 at 9:00 pm EST.
