ASAGWARA NAMED CIS AND CANADA WEST FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Wednesday, January 10, 2007 – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen are pleased to announce that fifth year women’s basketball star Uzo Asagwara has been chosen as the CIS and Canada West Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 7, 2007.
Asagwara, a four time Academic All-Canadian scored 61 points (30.5 points per game) in a pivotal two game series against the University of Manitoba Bisons. Asagwara, a Wesmen captain and last seasons CIS scoring leader, led all scorers in both contests tallying 27 points in an 83-81 overtime win on Thursday and following up with 34 points in an 82-64 victory on Saturday. The 22-year-old added 12 rebounds and seven steals over the weekend as the Canada West Great Plains Division-leading Wesmen (8-4) opened a two-game lead over second-place Manitoba (6-6).
Asagwara , the current CIS scoring leader (28.0 ppg) and the Wesmen will be on the road this weekend playing a pair of 10-2 teams, the Alberta Pandas and Saskatchewan Huskies.
