WESMEN "RING" IN NEW SEASON WITH VICTORY

The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up their 2007-08 season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) preseason victory over the Regina Cougars at the Duckworth Centre Friday night. The highlight of the match was the pre match festivities which saw the 2006-07 National Champions receive their championship rings and raise the championship banner to the rafters of the Duckworth Centre. Head Coach Larry McKay relied on his veterans for the first two sets. CIS Tournament All-Stars Ben Schellenberg and Dustin Addison-Schneider, who was also named the MVP of last seasons nationals, picked up where they left off last March. The Wesmen took a two set to nothing lead with set wins of 25-20 and 25-21. In the third set McKay, gave his veterans a rest and was able to give some of his impressive recruiting class some valuable court time. The Wesmen held their own taking the third set 25-22. The two teams will meet up Saturday night at thre Duckworth Centre for another pre-season tilt. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.

 4:00 p.m. Manitoba def WESMEN  3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17)
                 - Fifth year LS and team captain Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 12 kills and eight defensive digs.
 

 7:00 p.m. WESMEN def Brandon  3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13) 
                 - First year outside Karen Montgomery had an outstanding match leading the Wesmen with 19 kills.
                  - Nicola Dirks finished with 11 kills and seven defensive digs.

WESMEN SURVIVE PRESEASON SCARE AGAINST COUGARS

The visiting Regina Cougars put a scare into the Winnipeg Wesmen on this evening. The defending national champions were able to pull out a 3-2 (25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-27, 15-11) victory over the Regina Cougars, Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The Wesmen got off to a great start in the first set jumping out to leads of 8-5 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen were able to capitalize on six Regina errors on their way to a 25-20 first set win. Winnipeg dominated the second set after the first technical timeout. The Wesmen reeled off nione straight points to take a 17-7 lead on the way to a 25-15 set win a 2-0 lead in the match. The Cougars started the comeback in the third set taking advantage of some Winnipeg errors and a relatively inexperienced lineup with several first year playes getting a chance to play and impress Head Coach Larry McKay. Winnipeg led 8-6 at the first technical timeout but Regina came back to lead 16-13 at the second technical timeout.  The Cougars went on to take the third set 25-22. In the fourth set Regina led for most of the match and towards the end of the set the Wesmen leading 25-24 had a chance to end the match only to msee the Cougars take three of the next four points to win the fourth set 27-25. Larry McKay inserted his starting lineup to begin the fifth set and it payed off as the trio of Ben Schellenberg, Alan Ahow and Justin Duff paced Winnipeg to a 15-11 fifth set win. Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with a match high 13 kills. Ryan DeBruyn and Ben Schellenberg were next with seven kills apiece. Matthew Brooks led the Cougars with 11 kills.

 6:00 p.m. WESMEN def Simon Fraser 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-21) (Semi Final)
                 - Nicola Dirks six kills, 13 defensive digs
                 - Shanti plett 11 defensive digs
                 - Dayna Kiesman 6 blocks.

Women’s Volleyball @ U of Regina Invitational (Final Round)

11:00 a.m. British Columbia def WESMEN 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 27-25, 20-25, 15-6)

WESMEN PUT UP A GOOD FIGHT AGAINST UBC

The Wesmen put up a good fight but the tough UBC Thunderbirds escaped with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 27-25, 20-25, 15-6) victory over the Wesmen in the final round match of the University of Regina Invitational Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Wesmen finish the tournament with a record of 2-3, but showed improvement as the tournament went along. "I thought the tournament was decent for us, it gave me an opportunity to see what we have to improve on", said Head Coach Diane Scott. Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 19 kills. Fourth year middle Dayna Kiesman finished with 10 kills. First year middle Lauren Sears, from Nova Scotia had a strong match with seven kills and two blocks. Jayme Menzies had a solid all around match defensiveley and setting up the offensive attack as a setter at times in the match.
