UND TOO MUCH FOR WESMEN IN PRE SEASON ACTION

The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 94-43  in a pre-season match at the Ralph Englestad Arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota Thursday evening.

The Fighting Sioux had their way with the Wesmen holding a demanding 44-16  lead at halftime. Winnipeg struggled all night from the field connecting on only 12-of-47 from the field (21%). Kaitlin Rempel led the Wesmen with 10 points.

The Wesmen will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon when they head to Mayville State to take on Jamestown College at the Mayville State Invitational. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

STRONG SECOND HALF PROPELS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER JAMESTOWN

The Winnipeg Wesmen overcame an 11 point deficit at halftime to defeat Jamestown College 61-50 at the Mayville State Invitational Tournament Friday afternoon.

The Wesmen trailed 29-18 at halftime but came out on fire in the second half and slowly chipped away at the Jamestown lead. Second year guard Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 20 points.

Winnipeg will wrap up their North Dakota road trip tomorrow night when they play the host Mayville State Comets in the teams last game of the tournament.

UBC def Wesmen 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19)

WESMEN DROP REGULAR SEASON OPENER TO UBC

The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19) Friday evening in Vancouver. Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks and first year middle Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with nine kills each. Dirks led Winnipeg defensiveley with 12 digs.

"We came out a bit nervous in the first set but we got better as the match went on", said Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

The opening night loss leaves Winnipeg with a record of 0-1 while the Thunderbirds improve to 2-0 in the very early stages of the 2007-08 Canada West regular season. The Wesmen will look to avenge the loss on Saturday night when the two teams meet once again in Vancouver. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (Pacific Time)

WESMEN UPEND T-BIRDS IN SEASON OPENING THRILLER

The defending CIS champions had their work cut out for them on the opening night of the Canada West regular season. The Wesmen defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 25-19, 14-25, 19-17) Friday evening in Vancouver.

Fifth year and team captain Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 16 kills. Alan Ahow had a strong match finishing with 11 kills. Dustin Addison-Schneider and Jon Kasforf collected seven defensive digs. 

The Wesmen and Thunderbirds will renew their rivalry Saturday night at the War Memorial Gym in Vancouver. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (Pacific Time)

  WESMEN DROP SECOND MATCH TO THUNDERBIRDS

The UBC Thunderbirds completed  a weekend sweep of the Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-12) victory Saturday night at the War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.

Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 12 kills on 33 attempts for an impressive kill percentage of 30%. Dirks along with first year player Karen Montgomery had eight defensive digs.

"We played a better match, our young middles did a better job in this match", said Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

The team got a big boost with the return of Marlee Bragg. Bragg is coming back from a serious knee injury that occured in the third match of the 2006-07 regular season. Bragg finished with four kills and four defensive digs.

"It was inspiring for the team to see Marlee hit the floor", said Scott.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 0-2. UBC remains perfect at 3-0.The Wesmen will continue the regular season on Friday night at the University of Manitoba to challenge the Bisons in the volleyball portion of the 2007-08 Duckworth Challenge.

UBC RALLIES TO DEFEAT WESMEN IN FIVE SETS

The UBC Thunderbirds came back from two sets down to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-15) in the final match of the weekend series Saturday  night in Vancouver.

Winnipeg raced out to a quick two sets to none lead winning the first two sets by an identical score of 25-19. UBC fought back and evened out the match winning the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-22. The fifth and deciding set was a see saw affair with several lead changes. UBC finally prevailed winning the set 17-15.

Andrew Town led Winnipeg with 17 kills. Ben Schellenberg finished with 15 kills and 14 defensive digs. Middle blocker Justin Duff had a strong match with an impressive 10 blocks. Alan Ahow collected 13 kills and nine blocks.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-1. The Wesmen will next see action on Friday night when they travel across town to meet the Manitoba Bisons in the volleyball portion of the 2007-08 Duckworth Challenge.
