WESMEN WIN REMATCH AGAINST ALBERTA

The top two ranked teams in the country met on this night in which was a rematch of the gold medal match at last years CIS National Championship. The Wesmen gained the upper hand sweeping the Alberta Golden Bears 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Fifth year outside Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with a match high 15 kills. Joel Schmuland led the Golden Bears with 13 kills.

The first set was a back and fourth affair with neither team holding a lead of more than five points. Winnipeg led 8-5 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen were able to take advantage of four Alberta service errors and finished with an attack percentage of 60% to win the first set 25-22.

The two teams battled in set number two with Winnipeg holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical, only to see Alberta battle back to take a 16-15 lead at the second technical timeout. A big block by Ryan DeBruyn gave Winnipeg a 24-23 lead only to see Alberta score the next point to tie the score at 24-24. Winnipeg was relentless and went on to score the next two points wto win the set 26-24.

Set number three was an epic battle between two gladiators, with neith team giving an inch. Winnipeg raced out to a 8-6 lead at the first technical only to once again see Alberta battle back to take a 16-15 lead at the second technical timeout. The teams exchanged points from that point on until the score was tied at 23-23. Alan Ahow pounded the go ahead point home for Winnipeg and it was only fitting that Schellenberg got thre match ending point on a big block to close out the set for Winnipeg at 25-23.

The number one ranked Golden Bears and the number two ranked Wesmen both sport even records of 4-1.

The two teams will battle in the concluding match of the weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:00 p.m.

SECOND HALF STRUGGLES HURT WESMEN IN LOSS TO REGINA

The Winnipeg Wesmen managed 19 points in the second half as they were defeated 76-51 by the Regina Cougars Friday night in Regina.

Winnipeg went ice cold in the second half connecting on only 7-of-30 shots from the field (23%), compared to a respectible 43% in the first half.

The Cougars were ahead of the Wesmen 43-32 at halftime and held their ground in the second half to secure the win.

First year players Dawna Wright and Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 13 points each. Wright also added five rebounds, two blocks and three steals.

The win improves Regina's record to 2-1, while the loss drops Winnipeg to 1-2 in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference.

The two teams will meet on Saturday night in Regina to wrap up the weekend series. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN SUFFER FIRST LOSS OF REGULAR SEASON

The Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 86-75 Friday night in Regina. The loss is rhe first in the regular season for the Wesmen, who entered the contest with a 2-0 record after back-to-back wins last week against Manitoba.

Fifth year forward Matt Opalko led Winnipeg with 16 points, including a pair of three pointers. Erfan Nasajpour finished with 15 points and added a team high four steals.

Winnipeg held a slim 39-38 lead at halftime only to see the Cougars outscore the Wesmen 48-36 in the second half.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-1 early on in the Canada West regular season standings.

The Wesmen and Cougars will meet on Saturday night in Regina to wrap up the weekend series. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

GOLDEN BEARS UPEND WESMEN IN FOUR

The Alberta Golden Bears recovered from last night's loss to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-23, 28-30, 25-15, 28-26) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Fourth year right side Joel Schmuland led Alberta with 19 kills. Fifth year opposite Ben Schellenberg and third year outside Andrew Town each had a match high 20 kills to lead the Wesmen.

In a carbon copy of last night's match, both teams were dead even in the first set. Alberta led at both technical timeouts by slim margins of 8-7 and 16-14. Despite letting Winnipeg back into the match with two service errors at the end of the first set, the Goldren Bears recovered to win the first set 25-23.

Alberta continued to hold the advanage in set number two, once again holding marginal leads of 8-6 and 16-15 at the timeouts. Winnipeg fell behind 18-15 but did not panic as they went on to score five straight points to hold a 20-18 lead. The teams exchanged points all the way to 28-28, when Schellenberg won the set for Winnipeg with a powerful kill and then a service ace to give Winnipeg the second set 30-28.

The Golden Bears took control of the match in set number three racing out to an 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout. Alberta was able to extend their lead to 16-9 at the second technical timeout. Alberta would go on to win the third set 25-15.

The fourth set once again saw these two talented squads battle to the bitter end. At the technical timeouts the Golden Bears held two point leads of 8-6 and 16-14. Winnipeg would battle back to tie the score as both teams exchanged points. At 23-23, Schellenberg came thru with a big kill to give the Wesmen the lead at 24-23, before Alberta would go on to outscore the Wesmen 5-2 down the stretch and win the fourth set 28-26.

The victory improves Alberta's record to 5-1, while Winnipeg drops to 4-2 in the Canada West Conference standings.

The Wesmen will have the bye next week and will prepare to host Trinity Western for two matches on November 23 & 24th at the Duckworth Centre.

COUGARS COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP OVER WESMEN

The Regina Cougars completed a weekend sweep against the Winnipeg Wesmen with a convincing 82-57 victory Saturday night in Regina.

The Wesmen were playing with a short lineup with three players felled by injuries. Winnipeg fell behind early in the game trailing 47-24 after twenty minutes of play.

The Wesmen played a better second half but the deficit was too much to overcome on this night. Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg in scoring with 13 points. Dawna Wright was the only other Wesmen player in double digits finishing with 12 points.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-3 on the year. Winnipeg will return home to face UBC and Victoria on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

COUGARS RUN AWAY FROM WESMEN TO GAIN VICTORY

The Regina Cougars used a strong second half to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 101-85 Friday night in Regina.

The Wesmen only trailed by five points, 46-41 at halftime but the Cougars outscored the Wesmen 55-44 in a wild second half with both teams scoring at a rapid pace.

Guard Jeff Lukomski scored a game high 39 points to lead the Cougars. Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour had his best game of the year finishing with a team high 32 points, including six three pointers.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to an even 2-2 in the Great Plains Division standings of the Canada West conference. The Wesmen will host UBC on Friday night, followed by a game against Victoria on saturday night.
