catieGOOCH LEADS WESMEN TO WIN OVER BOBCATS

Second year guard Catie Gooch scored a game high 28 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 75-60 victory over the visiting Brandon Bobcats Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Gooch connected on 7-of-11 from the field, including four-three pointers and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Gooch also added four rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead the Wesmen to victory. First year guard Amy Ogidan finished with 16 points and Alex MacIver finished with a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bobcats were led by the duo of Melanie Thompson and Jayla Bousquet, each scoring 14 points.

The Wesmen got off to a great start in this firast quarter racing out to a 15-6 first quarter lead, taking advantage of Brandon's shooting troubles. The Bobcats connected on only 18% of their shots in the opening quarter.

Brandon played a better second quarter but the Wesmen attack was too strong to overcome. The Wesmen held a 34-25 lead at halftime.

The Wesmen were able to hold off Brandon in the second half outscoring the Bobcats 41-35. The Wesmen connected on 48% of their shots in the second half and were a perfect nine-for-nine from the free throw line to secure the victory.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-6, while Brandon falls to 0-9 in the regular season.

The Wesmen and Bobcats will wrap up the home and home series on Saturday in Brandon. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

BEN KWESMEN STRUGGLES HELP BRANDON GAIN VICTORY

The Brandon Bobcats took advantage of some second half struggles by the Winnipeg Wesmen and came away with a 87-68 victory over the Wesmen Thursday night in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen struggled to shoot just 27% from the field in the second half and only managed to score 22 points in the half.

Fifth year forward Adam Hartman and third year guard Dany Charlery led Brandon with a game high 26 points each. Fifth year guard Yul Michel finished with 16 points and eight assists.

The Wesmen had three players in double digits, led by fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour, who finished with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. First year post Ben Kingdon had his best game of his young career finishing with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Fifth year forward Matt Opalko chipped in 11 points in the loss.

Both teams came out on fire in an exciting back and forth first half. Winnipeg connected on 53% of their shots from the field which helped hold a slim 46-44 lead at halftime.

Brandon opened the third quarter on a 12-4 run to hold a 56-50 lead near the midway point of the quarter. Winnipeg would go on to outscore Brandon 10-8 to only trail 64-60 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was all Brandon as the Wesmen shooting went cold and could only score eigh points in a tough way to end the game. Brandon would outscore Winnipeg 23-8 in the final quarter.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-5, while the Bobcats sit at 8-1 and in first place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference.

The two teams will meet in Brandon on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

nicSPARTANS UPEND STUBBORN WESMEN IN FOUR

The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated a stubborn and relentless Winnipeg Wesmen team 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 25-27, 25-23) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-15. The Wesmen showed some grit and determination winning the third set 27-25 before dropping the fourth set 25-23.

Fifth year left/right side Alicia Van Huizen had a solid match for the Spartans collecting 12 kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Fourth year middle Dayna Jansen Van Doorn also had 12 kills and three solo blocks. First year setter Chelsea Hudson finished with 43 set assists and eight defensive digs.

Fifth year left side Niciola Dirks led the Wesmen with 16 kills. First year ls/rs Karen Montgomery had eight kills and 10 defensive digs. Libero Shanti Plett was solid on the defensive front finishing with a match high 22 digs. Middle blockers Lauren Sears and Dayna Kiesman eached finished with three solo blocks.

The Spartans got off to a great start in the first set holding leads of 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen made a late push at the end of the set but the Spartans prevailed taking the first set 25-18.

The Wesmen fell behind in set number two, trailing 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. The Spartans would outscore Winnipeg 9-4 down the stretch to win the second set 25-15 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Winnipeg showed their grit and determination in the third set jumping out to a 8-6 lead at the first technical before Trinity Western would rebound to take a 16-15 lead at the second timeout. The Wesmen were able to fight off four match points at the end of the set and after back-to-back kills by Karen Montgomery the Wesmen would go on to win the third set 27-25.

The Wesmen were forced once again to play catch up in the fourth set as the Spartans held leads of 8-4 and 16-14 at the timeouts. The Spartans were able to hold on to their slim leads down the stretch winning the fourth set 25-23.

The victory improves the number eight ranked Spartans record to 7-2. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-7 in the Canada West standings.

The two teams will meet Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN SHOW FIGHT IN LOSS TO SPARTANS

The Winnipeg Wesmen may have lost their second match in a row to the Trinity Western University Spartans but they did not go down without a fight. The Spartans completed a weekend sweep with a tough 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16) victory over the Wesmen at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg Saturday night.

Middle Dayna Jansen Van Doorn led the way for the Spartans with 14 kills and two blocks. Fifth year middle Liz Spear finished with 11 kills and four blocks. Libero Julie McLeod collected 17 defensive digs and setter Chelsea Hudson finished the match with 48 set assists.

Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 20 kills and also recorded 11 digs, three blocks and a service ace. First year LS/RS Karen Montgomery finished the match with 11 kills. Middle Dayna Kiesman had a solid match with eight kills and eight blocks. Setter Jayme Menzies had 44 set assists to go with seven digs and two blocks.

The first set was a tight affair with the Spartans holding slim 8-7 and 16-15 leads at the technical timeouts. The Spartans would hold off the Wesmen attack led by Nicola Dirks who had four kills at the end of the first set but the Spartans would hang on to win the first set 25-23.

The Wesmen came out on fire in set number two racing out to leads of 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg continued their fine play taking the score to 24-16 when Trinity Western scored seven unanswered points to make the score 24-23 in Winnipeg's favour. Winnipeg would get the final point and win the second set 25-23.

The Spartans would regroup in set number three with leads of 8-3 and 16-14 at the two technical timeouts. A block and a kill by Lauren Sears would give Winnipeg the lead at 18-17 but the Spartans would recover and go on to win the third set 25-22.

In set number four Trinity Western gained an early advantage and never looked back, holding leads of 8-5 and 16-12 at the timeouts. Trinity would go on to outscore the Wesmen 9-4 down the stretch to win the fourth and final set 25-16.

The loss leaves Winnipeg with a record of 2-8 at the holiday break. The Spartans improve to 8-2.

WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP AGAINST BRANDON

Catie Gooch scored a game high 21 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 72-63 victory over the Brandon Bobcats, Saturday afternoon in Brandon.

Gooch was on fire shooting an impressive 6-for-9 from the field, including three-for-three from three point land and was perfect from the free throw line going six-for-six.

The Wesmen held a 31-26 lead at halftime and had a strong third quarter outscoring Brandon 22-18 to take control of the game.

First year guard Dawna Wright finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and second year post Alex MacIver finished with 12 points.

Melanie Thompson led Brandon with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jayla Bousquet contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

The victory leaves Winnipeg with a record of 4-6 heading into the holiday break. Brandon remains winless at 0-10.

OPENING QUARTER HURTS WESMEN IN LOSS TO BOBCATS

One bad quarter was the teams downfall on this night. The Wesmen were outscored 23-5 in the opening quarter in a 82-68 loss to the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday night in Brandon.

" We could not fill the ocean if we were waist deep", said Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook, explaining the teams shooting woes in the first quarter.

The shooting woes allowed Brandon to take a 39-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. Winnipeg played a better second half but were outscored 43-42 in the second half.

Fifth year forward Matt Opalko was the only Wesmen player to score in double digits finishing with a game high 21 points.

Adam Hartman led Brandon with 17 points and eight rebounds.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-6 heading into the holiday break. The Bobcats sit at the top of the Great Plains Division with a 9-1 record,
