WESMEN SWEEP SFU FOR FIRST WIN

The Winnipeg Wesmen earned their first win of the 2007-08 regular season with an impressive 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) sweep against the Simon Fraser University Clan Friday night in Winnipeg.

Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 12 kills. First year middle blocker Lauren Sears had an all-round great match finishing with six kills, two service aces and three digs. The Clan were led by third year middle Colleen Douville who collected six kills. Fourth year libero Laura Mireault had a match high 11 digs for the Clan.

The Wesmen started the match on a great note racing out to a 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout and expanding their lead to 16-6 at the second technical. The Wesmen would close out the first set on a 9-3 run, with the last three points coming off Simon Fraser attacking errors. Winnipeg won the first set 25-9. Winnipeg had an impressive attack percentage of 42% in the set.

In the second set Winnipeg took control early with a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout before exploding for a 8-2 run to take a commanding 16-9 lead at the second technical timeout. Simon Fraser took adavantage of some Winnipeg errors to close the gap to 23-19, but kills by Karen Montgomery and Nicola Dirks closed out the set at 25-20 in favour of the Wesmen.

Winnipeg would go in for the kill in set number three holding leads of 8-3 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg would keep their focus and outscore the Clan 9-6 down the stretch to win the third and final set 25-17.

The victory gives Winnipeg a record of 1-6, while Simon Fraser remains winless at 0-8. The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. Match time is 7:00 p.m.

Men's Volleyball vs Trinity Western
WESMEN def Trinity Western 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17)

WESMEN WIN BATTLE OF PAST CHAMPIONS

The second ranked Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the number seventh ranked Trinity Western 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17) in a battle of the last two CIS Men's Volleyball champions, Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg (5-2) was led by fourth year outside Alan Ahow's 12 kills, followed by third year middle Ryan DeBruyn, who was on his game this night with 11 kills in 13 attempts. Jon Kasdorf had a match high 13 defensive digs for Winnipeg.

The Spartans (4-3) were led offensiveley by second year left side Mikiah Schalk's 14 kills. Fifth year right side Steve Rogalsky had 11 kills to go with four block assists.

Trinity Western gained the upper hand in the match by leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg would recover to take a 16-12 lead at the second technical timeout. Both teams exchanged points to 21-21 and from their it was back-and-forth action with Trinity Western taking the first set 26-24.

Winnipeg made adjustments and came to play in the second set racing out to leads of 8-3 and 16-11 against the flustered Spartans. Winnipeg would capatalize on three Spartan errors and go on a 9-5 run to win the second set at 25-16.

The Wesmen took control of the match in the pivotal third set with leads of 8-6 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen got strong play from Ahow and DeBruyn, who each had two big kills towards the end of the set to pace Winnipeg to a 25-21 third set win.

Winnipeg carried the play in the fourth set holding big leads of 8-2 and 16-10 at the timeouts. The Spartans would not be able to recover as the Wesmen completed the match with a 25-17 fourth set win.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 5-2, while the Spartans drop to 4-3. The two teams will meet on Saturday night to conclude the weekend series. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m.

WESMEN DROP CLOSE ONE TO SPARTANS

The Winnipeg Wesmen lost a close 73-67 decision to the Trinity Western University Spartans, Friday night in Langley, B.C.

Second year guard Catie Gooch led the Wesmen in scoring with 20 points.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-5. Winnipeg will continue their road with a game on Saturday night against the number one ranked and defending CIS champions Simon Fraser University. Game time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)

WESMEN 89  Trinity Western 82

HOT SHOOTING WESMEN DEFEAT SPARTANS

The Winnipeg Wesmen connected on an amazing 66% of their shots from the field in the first half to pace the way for an 89-82 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Friday night in Langley, BC.

Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen in scoring with 26 points and also added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Matt Opalko contributed on both ends of the court with 17 points, four rebounds and six assists.

Winnipeg held a lead of 45-30 at halftime and continued their solid play in the second half to preserve the victory.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-3. The Wesmen will meet the Simon Fraser University Clan on Saturday night. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)

Men's Volleyball vs Trinity Western
WESMEN def Trinity Western 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-20)

WESMEN COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP AGAINST SPARTANS

The second ranked Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep against the Trinity Western University Spartans with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-20) victory over the Spartans Saturday night in Winnipeg.

Fifth year Ben Schellenberg completed a solid weekend with a match high 14 kills and 12 defensive digs. Andrew Town was next in the kill category finishing with 10 kills. Dustin Addison Schneider was a serving machine finishing with a match high five service aces.

Steve Rogalsky led Trinity Western with nine kills and Mikiah Schalk finished with eight kills and seven defensive digs. Josh Doornenbal had three service aces in a row in the secon set and also finished with three blocks.

The first set was a tight affair with Trinity Western holding an 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Both teams exchanged points until a service ace by Addison Schneider and a big kill from Alan Ahow gave the Wesmen a 16-15 lead at the second tehnical timeout. The Spartans would go on a 5-2 run, led by back-to-back kills by Chaim Schalk to take a 20-18 lead. The combination of Ben Schellenberg and Ryan DeBruyn camr thru with key kills and big blocks to help the Wesmen win the first set 26-24.

Winnipeg got off to a quick start in set number two, leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout and expanding their lead to 16-11 at the second technical. The Wesmen held a 21-13 lead when Josh Doornenbal served up three consecutive service aces to cut the Wesmen lead to 21-16. Winnipeg would recover and eventually win the second set 25-18.

Set number three was like the previous one with the Wesmen maintaing leads of 8-4 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The Spartans would come to within two points at 19-17 but a big kill from Town and a block from Addison-Schneider put the momentum back on Winnipeg's side. Ben Schellenberg pounded home the last two points to close out the set in Winnipeg's favour at 25-20.

The Wesmen now head into the holiday break with a record of 6-2, while the Spartans fall to 4-4.

WESMEN MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW OVER SIMON FRASER

The Winnipeg Wesmen recorded their second consecutive sweep against the Simon Fraser University Clan. The Wesmen defeated the Clan 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-19) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Fifth year Nicola Dirks once again led the Wesmen with 13 kills. First year middle Lauren Sears was all over the court finishing with seven kills and four blocks. Fourth year middle Dayna Kiesman had very strong serving match collecting six service aces. Jayme Menzies had 31 assists and two defensive digs.

The Clan were led by Jennifer Northrup who collected eight kills and three blocks. Laura Mireault led Simon Fraser with nine defensive digs.

Simon Fraser started the first set being more competitive than in last night's match. The Wesmen held slim leads of 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Back to back kills by Lauren Sears down the stretch gave the Wesmen a 24-19 lead before a service error by the Clan gave the Wesmen the first set at 25-20.

The second set was all Wesmen as they built leads of 8-4 and 16-6 at the technical timeouts. Led by Nicola Dirks and her six kills in the set, Winnipeg would go on to win the second set 25-12.

The Wesmen continued their strong play in the third set building a lead of 8-5 at the first technical timeout and expanding the lead to 16-9 at the second technical. A total team effort down the stretch carried the Wesmen to a 25-19 third set victory.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-6, while the Clan remain winless at 0-9.

SIMON FRASER UPEND WESMEN ON THE COAST

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped an 82-73 decision to the Simon Fraser University Clan on Saturday night in British Columbia.

Simon Fraser held a slim 42-41 lead on the Wesmen at halftime. Winnipeg who shot a scorching 52% in last night's victory over Trinity Western, connected on only 35% from the field on the night.

Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 25 points and added six rebounds, six assists to his totals. Peter Lomuro had his best game of the season finishing with 17 points.

" We have some injuries and we dont have enough bodies in there, the guys were exhausted", said Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.

Winnipeg now sports arecord of 4-4 and will open up a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats starting on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

NUMBER ONE RANKED SIMON FRASER DEFEAT WESMEN

The number one ranked and defending CIS champions, Simon Fraser University Clan defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 91-53 Saturday night in British Columbia.

The Wesmen already without third year forward Jessica Stromberg went into the contest minus third year guard Randie Gibson, who suffered a lower body injury Friday night against Trinity Western.

First year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 18  points, followed by second year guard Catie Gooch's nine points.

Winnipeg fell into a big whole early on trailing 45-26 at halftime. Simon Fraser would go on to outscore Winnipeg 46-27 in the second half to cruise to the victory.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-6 on the season, while the Clan remain undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record.

Winnipeg will next see action at home on Thursday night against the Brandon Bobcats. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
