UBC ESCAPE WITH WIN OVER WESMEN

The number two ranked UBC Thunderbirds escaped with a 65-54 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in front of 1605 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night.

Fifth year guard Erica McGuinness led UBC with 15 points and seven assist. First year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 15 points, including two-three pointers.

The Wesmen showed true grit early on this contest. Winnipeg fell behind 13-6 midway thru the first quarter but went on a 10-0 run sparked by three pointers by Amy Ogidan and Rosemary Mills to grab a 16-13 lead. Winnipeg would stand their ground and hold a 20-17 lead after one quarter.

UBC opened the second quarter with five quick points to grab the lead back from the Wesmen at 22-20. UBC's experience and clutch shooting would come thru late in the quarter with three pointers by Cait Haggarty and McGuinness would propel UBC to a 36-32 lead at halftime.

Winnipeg was held to two points for the first four minutes to start the third quarter as they watched UBC open up a 46-34 lead near the midway point of the quarter. UBC was able to expand their lead to 53-41 after three quarters of play.

Both teams were locked in a defensive struggle in the fourth quarter as UBC was able to hold off the Wesmen, outscoring them 65-54 for the victory on this night.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-4, while the victory improves UBC's record to 6-1. The Wesmen will host the Victoria Vikes (4-3) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

HOT SHOOTING T-BIRDS DOWN WESMEN

A hot shooting UBC Thunderbird squad defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 78-64 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The number four ranked T-Birds connected on an impressive 57% from the field, including 62% in the second half.

Chris Dyck led UBC with a game high 31 points, including 10-of-11 from the free throw line. The Wesmen were led by fifth year post Dan Shynkaryk, who had his best game of the season finishing with 21 points, including a pair of highlight reel dunks.

Both teams played a cautious first quarter as baskets were hard to come by as both teams made statements with strong defensive play. The score was even at 14-14 after the opening quarter.

A quick 7-2 run by Winnipeg gave the Wesmen their biggest lead of the game 21-16. UBC would start to find their shooting range at the 3:00 mark as they outscored the Wesmen 16-7 to take a 32-28 lead at halftime.

The teams would exchange baskets at the start of the third quarter until UBC went on a 8-2 run to take a 53-45 lead with just over two minutes to play in the quarter. UBC led after three quarters 58-48.

The Wesmen would try their best to chip away at the UBC leasd but they were unable to close the gap as UBC went on for the road victory.

The loss for the Wesmen (2-3) is the team's third in a row, while the victory improves UBC's record to 6-1. The Wesmen will look to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Victoria Vikes (6-1) at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

Calgary def WESMEN  3-0  (25-22, 25-9, 25-22)

WESMEN FALL TO DINOS IN CALGARY

The Winnipeg Wesmen were swept 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-22) by the Calgary Dinos in a match on Friday night in Calgary.

Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 12 kills. First year player Karen Montgomery had six kills and one service ace in the match.

Winnipeg played a pretty solid first and third set but were beaten in the second set by a Calgary team that had an attack percentage of 52%, with only two errors.

"We played ok, but we can play better", said Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 0-5 on the regular season. The two teams will meet on Saturday night in Calgary to wrap up the weekend series. Match time is 7:00 p.m. (8:00 WPG Time)

WESMEN USE LONG BALL TO DEFEAT VIKES

The Winnipeg Wesmen connected for 12-three pointers to help them defeat the Victoria Vikes 68-57 Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg connected on 12-of-22 (55%) three point attempts in the contest, including five from Randie Gibson and four from Dawna Wright.

Wright led the Wesmen with 24 points, followed by Gibson's 17 points. Amy Ogidan finished with a double-double 10 points and a game high 14 rebounds.

The Vikes were led by Ryan McKay's 18 points and seven rebounds. Kayla Dykstra was next with 16 points.

Winnipeg went into the locker room at halftime with a slim 31-30 lead on the Vikes. Winnipeg went on to outscore Victoria 18-10 in the third quarter and held their biggest lead of the game at 49-40 after three quarters.

Winnipeg was able to match Victoria basket for basket to start the fourth quarter and held a 56-48 lead at the midway point of the quarter. Wright drained two big three pointers down the stretch to secure the victory for the Wesmen.

The victory ends a three game losing skid for the Wesmen and improves their record to 2-4 in the regular season. The loss drops Victoria to 4-4. The Wesmen will travel to the west coast next weekend for games against Trinity Western on Friday and the defending CIS champions, Simon Fraser on Saturday.

NASAJPOUR POURS IN 41 TO LEAD WESMEN TO VICTORY

Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour scored a Canada West season high 41 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 70-67 overtime victory over the Victoria Vikes Saturday in Winnipeg.

Nasajpour was on fire connecting on 13-of-22 from the field, including five three pointers, six rebounds and four steals. Dan Shynkaryk was the only other Wesmen player in double digits scoring 10 points on the night.

The Vikes were led by Tyler Hass, finishing with 14 points. Robbie Kinnear was next finishing with a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Winnipeg found themselves in a hole at halftime trailing by a score of 34-23. After the halftime break the Wesmen stepped up their defensive play and Nasajpour caught fire. The Wesmen held Victoria to nine points in the quarter and Nasajpour exploded for 13 of Winnipeg's 20 points in the quarter to even the game at 43-43 after three quarters.

Victoria started the fourth quarter on a strong note outscoring the Wesmen 12-4 to grab a 55-47 lead with over two minutes to play in regulation time. A Nasajpour three pointer and a big block by Shynkaryk closed the gap to 57-55. Shynkaryk and Cam Hornby, who made his Wesemn debut in this game combined to come up with a big steal and Hornby was able to go in for the game tieing lay up with 23 seconds left to lead to overtime.

Nasajpour scored nine points in the extra frame to help Winnipeg outscore Victoria 13-10 to earn the victory.

The win snaps a three game losing streak and even's Winnipeg's record to 3-3 on the season. The Wesmen will travel to British Columbia next week to face Trrinity Western on Friday night followed by Simon Fraser on Saturday night.

Calgary def WESMEN 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22)

WESMEN SHOW IMPROVEMENT IN LOSS TO DINOS

The Wesmen showed signs of improvement in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22) loss to the Calgary Dinos Saturday night in Calgary.

The Wesmen won their first set in the 2007-08 regular season. " It was our best match of the year so far we got the monkey of our backs by winning a set", said Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 19 kills. First year middle Lauren Sears finished with nine kills and five blocks. Karen Montgomery also had a good match with eight kills and nine defensive digs.

The loss keeps Winnipeg winless at 0-6 in the regular season. Winnipeg will play host to Simon Fraser on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.
