WESMEN 49 Manitoba 68WESMEN STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO MANITOBA
The Manitoba Bisons took advantage of a struggling Winnipeg Wesmen team and walked out of the Duckworth centre with a 68-49 victory over the Wesmen in the opening game of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge Thursday night.
Tessa Klassen and Michele Hynes eached scored a game high 20 points to lead Manitoba. Caitlin Gooch was the top scorer for Winnipeg finishing with 12 points followed by Randie Gibson with 10 points.
Manitoba opened up a 33-21 lead at halftime, a half which saw Winnipeg struggle from the field only connecting on 27% from the field, including 2-for-11 from three point range.
The Bisons outscored the Wesmen 19-11 in the third quarter to build a 52-32 lead after three quarters of play. The Wesmen tried to fight back in the fourth quarter but the Bison lead was too much to overtake.
Tessa Klassen was named the Duckworth Challenge MVP for Manitoba, while Randie Gibson took the MVP honors for Winnipeg.
The two team will meet on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at the University of Manitoba.

WESMEN 73 Manitoba 72WESMEN BEAT BISONS AT THE BUZZER
Fifth year forward Matt Opalko drained the game winning three pointer at the buzzer to give the Winnipeg Wesmen a dramatic 73-72 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Thursday night in front of 1529 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. The regular season opening victory gives Winnipeg a record of 1-0 while Manitoba sits at 0-1 in the very early stages of the Canada West regular season.
Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour had a team high 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Isaac Ansah led Manitoba with a game high 28 points.The Bisons controlled the play in the first half leading 18-9 after the opening quarter and going to the locker room at halftime with a 36-28 lead.
Winnipeg went a 9-2 run to open up the second half and cut the Bison lead to a single point at 38-37. Later in the third quarter Ansah and Darcy Coss, who finished with 19 points including five-three pointers drained back-to-back three pointers to lift manitoba to a 57-52 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter Winnipeg fought back only to see Manitoba answer them back with a basket of their own. The Wesmen were able to grab their first lead of the game (63-62) on a Nasajpour three pointer midway thru the quarter. Coss and Ansah gave Manitoba a six point lead at 72-66 with just over a minute to play only to see the Wesmen storm back with baskets from Nick Lother and Michael Passley's big two pointer with 26 seconds left in the game to set things up for Opalko's big game winning shot.
Nick Lother scored 14 points for the Wesmen, Opalko finished with 12 points. Nasajpour was named the Duckworth Challenge MVP for the Wesmen, and Ansah was named the MVP for the Bisons.
The two teams will meet on Saturday night at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 8:15 p.m.

Manitoba def WESMEN 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22)BISONS DEFEAT WESMEN AT DUCKWORTH CHALLENGE
The Wesmen put in a great effort but fell short in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) loss to the Manitoba Bisons Friday night at the University of Manitoba in the women's match of the volleyball portion of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
Manitoba had to fight off several Winnipeg charges in the first set, but showed why they are presently the number one ranked team in the country winning the first set 25-19.
In the second set Winnipeg managed to grab the lead on a few occassions only to see the Bisons storm back and win the second set 25-22 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Winnipeg stormed out of the gate in set number three holding a 11-3 lead only to see the Manitoba fight back to win the third and deciding set 25-22.
Amy Matthews led Manitoba with 11 kills and was named the Manitoba Duckworth Challenge MVP. Sarah Morrissette led the Bisons defensively with 13 defensive digs.
Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with a match high 12 kills. Brooklyn Brunel, who was chosen as the Winnipeg Duckworth Challenge MVP led the team with nine defensive digs.
The victory improves Manitoba's record to 3-0, and the loss drops the Wesmen to 0-3. The two teams will meet on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre to wrap up the weekend series. Match time is 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN BEAT MANITOBA IN DUCKWORTH CHALLENGE FINALE
The number four ranked Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-23) in the finale of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the University of Manitoba.
Second year middle Justin Duff led Winnipeg with 15 kills. Alan Ahow had a strong match finishing with 10 kills and six defensive digs. Fifth year outside Ben Schellenberg pounded home nine kills and had a strong match at the net with four blocks. Schellenberg for his efforts was named the Duckworth Challenge MVP for Winnipeg.
John Galloway led Manitoba with nine kills and earned the Duckworth Challenge MVP for the Bisons.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-1 and the loss leaves Manitoba with a record of 0-1, in this their first match of the regular season.
The two teams will meet Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
The 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge finishes a tie, Winnipeg's overall record at the challenge now stands at 4-8-5.

Men's Volleyball vs Manitoba
WESMEN def Manitoba 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 15-12)"BIG BEN" LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER MANITOBA
Fifth year power hitter Ben Schellenberg showed why he is one of the best players in the CIS on this evening. Schellenberg finished with a match high 21 kills to lead the Wesmen to a 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 15-12) victory over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen gained the upper hand in the first set maintaining leads of 8-7 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Manitoba did fight back to close to within a point but Schellenberg closed out the set with two big kills to a 25-23 first set win.
Manitoba continued to put the pressure on Winnipeg in the second set holding a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg went on a 9-5 run, with key kills by Alan Ahow and Ryan DeBruyn to take a 16-13 lead at the second technical. "Big Ben" came thru with two huge blocks to secure the final two points and giving Winnipeg a 25-19 set two win and a strangle hold on the match.
The Bisons did not lay down, they continued to put the pressure on the defending national champions and were able to win the third set 25-21 and the fourth set 25-23 to even the match at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set Schellenberg came thru with four kills and two blocks to pace the Wesmen to a 15-12 win in the fifth and final set.
Andrew Town was also solid for Winnipeg finishing with 14 kills.
The Bisons were led by second year left side Stefan Bouw who finisjed with 10 kills.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-1, while Manitoba drops to 0-2 in the Canada West regular season standings.
Winnipeg will next see action next weekend when they host the Alberta Golden Bears for two matches beginning on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The number one ranked Manitoba Bisons showed their dominance in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-16) sweep against the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Second year left side Sarah Morrissette led the Bisons with seven kills and seven defensive digs.
The Wesmen were led by Marlee Bragg's seven kills. Libero Shanti Plett led Winnipeg with eight defensive digs.
The victory improves Manitoba's record to a perfect 4-0, while the Wesmen fall to 0-4min the Canada West regular season standings.
The Wesmen will have the bye next week and will next see action on Nov. 16th, when they travel to Calgary to begin a weekend series against the Dino's.

WESMEN 86 Manitoba 59WESMEN REBOUND TO DEFEAT BISONS
The Winnipeg Wesmen recovered from Thursday's tough game and walked out of the University of Manitoba with a convincing 86-59 victory over the Bisons.
Winnipeg was able to hold a slim lead of 18-15 after the opening quarter and made several shots from the outside to extend their lead to 40-29 at halftime.
The Wesmen came out on fire in the second half outscoring Manitoba 46-30 to run away with the victory. Winnipeg shot an impressive 54% from the field, compared to only 31% for Manitoba.
Dawna Wright led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points and also hauled in eight rebounds. Amy Ogidan was next with 16 points, followed by Catie Gooch's 14 points, including a pair of three pointers.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to an even 1-1. The team will hit the road next weekend to Regina for a pair of games against the Cougars.

WESMEN 72 Manitoba 60WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP
Second year guard Nick Lother scored a game high 20 points to lead the Wesmen to a 72-60 win over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the University of Manitoba.
Lother, drained three-three pointers, and also finished with six rebounds and five assists to help Winnipeg complete a two game sweep against Manitoba.
Winnipeg held a nine point lead 32-23 at halftime and were able to extend their lead in the second half outscoring the Bisons 40-37.
Winnipeg dominated under the boards outrebounding Manitoba 51-43 with Matt Opalko hauling in a game high 10 rebounds.
Brian Crowe led the Bisons with 14 points. Erfan Nasajpour was next for Winnipeg finishing with 12 points.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-0. The Wesmen will travel to Regina next week to begin a weekend series against the Cougars on Friday and Saturday nights.
