BISONS SHOW DOMINANCE IN VICTORY OVER WINNIPEG

The Manitoba Bisons simply dominated defeating Winnipeg 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-15) in the opening match of the volleyball portion of the 16th Annual Duckworth Challenge held at the Duckworth Centre. The number three ranked team in the country, the Bisons showed their dominance in the opening set racing out to leads of 8-2 and 16-5 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg tried to battle back but the Bison attack was too strong with Manitoba taking the first set 25-16. The Bisons continued the attack in set number two as Winnipeg was only able to muster an attack percentage of (.111). Manitoba took a strangle hold of the match winning the set 25-13. In the third and final set Winnipeg fell behind 8-4 and 16-9 at the technical timeouts and once again had to dig themselves out of a huge hole. The Bisons put a cover on the hole beating the Wesmen 25-15 in the set to win the match. Sabrina Barnes led the Bisons with 11 kills, followed by Erin Nieuwenburg who finished with 10 kills. Bison rookie Ashley Voth had a strong game with nine kills and 12 defensive digs. The Wesmen were led by Nicola Dirks with seven kills, Jayme Menzies and Dayna Kiesman followed with six kills apiece. The Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game were Sabrina Barnes of the Bisons and Kaitlyn Lewis of the Wesmen.The victory improves manitoba's record to 12-2 while the loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-12 on the season. The Wesmen will not have much time to rest as they will play host to the Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN DEFEAT BISONS IN CLASSIC BATTLE BETWEEN RIVALS

A Winnipeg Wesmen vs Manitoba Bisons match is always a classic. Once again on this night it was as the Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 25-27, 15-10) in a classic thriller at the Duckworth Challenge on Wednesday night. The victory by the Wesmen tied the 16th Duckworth Challenge at 2-2, which means Winnipeg holds on to the Challenge Title for the third straight year. The first set was a tight one with both teams exchanging point for point until Winnipeg went on a bit of a run towards the end of the set to win the first set 25-21. In the second set it was more of the same with both teams not giving each other one space to breath. Winnipeg extended it's lead to 2-0 with a dramatic 25-23 set win. Manitoba made adjustments in set number three and it seemed to work as the Bisons got back into the match winning the set 25-18. In the fourth set Manitoba was battling to stay in the match and it showed as the Bisons established a hitting percentage of .441 on their way to a 27-25 set four win. In the fifth set Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead at the timeout. Key kills by Ben Schellenberg and Richard Wiebe helped the Wesmen extend it's lead to 12-6. The Bisons did try to mount a late charge but the Wesmen held their ground to take the fifth set 15-10. Richard Wiebe led the Wesmen attack with 15 kills followed by Ben Schellenberg who finished with 14. Andrew Town was named the Winnipeg Wesmen Player of the game finishing with 12 kills and 11 defensive digs. The Player of the Game for Manitoba was Josh Klassen who finished with a match-high 21 kills. Toon van Lankvelt was next with 19 kills. The win improves Winnipeg's record to 9-3 and extends it's winning streak to six matches. Manitoba drops to 7-7. The Wesmen will next see action on Friday night when the Regina Cougars come to town. Match time is 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

COUGARS DEFEAT WESMEN IN THREE

The Regina Cougars defeated the host Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17) in the first match of a weekend double header Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. In the first set Regina took early control building leads of 8-4 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen did pick up some momentum going on a 6-4 run to close the gap to 20-16, only to see the Cougars score five straight points to win the first set 25-16. In set number two Nicola Dirks of the Wesmen put away a couple of kills to give the Wesmen a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. The Cougars made adjustments and were able to grab the lead back at 16-12 at the second technical. Winnipeg was unable to close the gap as Regina went on to win the set 25-17 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. In the third set it was more of the same with Regina holding a slim 8-5 lead at the first timeout only to increase their lead to 16-8 at the second technical timeout. At the end of the third set with the score 23-13 for Regina, Winnipeg reeled off three straight impressive points to cut the lead but it was a case of too little too late as Regina won the third set 25-17. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 13 kills. The Cougars were led by Tammy Jule who finished with a match high 14 kills. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-13, while the Cougars improve to 6-9 on the season. The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN FORCED TO FIGHT FOR WIN OVER COUGARS

The Regina Cougars gave the Winnipeg all they could handle, but the Wesmen were able to prevail defeating the Cougars 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23) Friday night in Winnipeg. The Wesmen trailed early in the first set and were forced to come from behind trailing 8-4 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen went on an impressive 10-2 run to tie the score the score at 18-18. The teams traded points back and forth until a service ace by Trevor Shaw and a powerful kill by Ben Schellenberg gave the Wesmen a 25-23 set one victory. In the second set Regina held the leads once again at both technical timeouts (8-6 and 16-12). The Wesmen were not able to come back in this set as the Cougars went on to tie the match with a 25-21 set win to even the match. In the third set Winnipeg was able to gain control and held the leads at both technical timeouts (8-5 and 16-15) for the first time in the match. The teams traded points back and forth until the Wesmen were able to close out the set winning 25-23. The Wesmen fell behind in the fourth set trailing 8-4 and 16-12 at the timeouts. As we saw all match the Wesmen were able fight back and gain control taking advantage of four straight attack errors by Regina to win the set 25-23. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 15 kills and eight defensive digs. Matthew Brooks led Regina with 15 kills. The victory extends Winnipeg's winning streak to seven matches, improving their record to 10-3. The Cougars fall to 1-14. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. in the conclusion of the weekend series.

SHOOTING WOES HURT WESMEN IN LOSS TO COUGARS

The Winnipeg Wesmen did not shoot well on this night and it showed as the Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 72-66 Friday night in Regina. The Wesmen as a team struggled to connect for 26% shooting from the field. Winnipeg's two leading scorers Uzo Asagwara and Stefanie Timmersman were a combined 5-for-33 on the night, as Regina's defensive players shut down the two Wesmen scorers. Despite the shooting woes Winnipeg only trailed 31-27 at halftime. In the second half Winnipeg put on a late charge with Uzo Asagwara scoring 10 straight points to keep the Wesmen in the game. The Cougars were able to hold their ground and the victory. Asagwara led all scorers with 19 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 10-7, two points back of the Manitoba Bisons in the race for first place in the Great Plains Division. The Cougars and Wesmen will meet Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. in the series finale.

WESMEN IMPRESSIVE IN WIN OVER REGINA

The Winnipeg Wesmen played a solid game as they defeated the Regina Cougars 84-69 in Regina on Friday night. The Wesmen once again received a total team effort with five players scoring in double-digits. Erfan Nasajpour led the charge with 21 points, followed by Dan Shynkaryk's 20 points. The Wesmen went into halftime with a slim 39-37 leasd but were able to extend their lead in the second half outscoring the Cougars 45-32. Winnipeg closed the game out going on a 17-9 run in the last seven minutes of the game. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 8-9, four points ahead of the Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars (6-11) for second place in the Great Plains Division. The two teams will meet tomorrow night at 8:00 to conclude the weekend series.

WESMEN BEAT COUGARS TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO EIGHT

The Winnipeg Wesmen extended their match winning streak to eight with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21) victory over the Regina Cougars Saturday night in Winnipeg. The Wesmen had complete control of the match in the first set winning in easy fashion by a score aof 25-15. The Wesmen continued their strong play in the second set building big leads at both technical timeouts on their way to winning the second set 25-14. In the third set the Cougars made adjustments and took advantage of a few Winnipeg errors to get back into the match winning the fourth set 25-23. The Wesmen were able to recover and win the fourth set 25-21. Andrew Town had a strong match for the Wesmen finishing with a match high 18 kills and two service aces. Richard Wiebe was solid on both ends of the ball finishing with 12 kills and 11 defensive digs. Mathew Brooks led the Cougars with 12 kills. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to an impressive 11-3 and currently puts them in a three way tie for second place in the Canada West standings. The Cougars record drops to 1-15 on the season. The Wesmen will head to Calgary to face the Dinos next Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN PUT IN GREAT EFFORT IN LOSS TO REGINA

The Winnipeg Wesmen played one of the their better matches of the season but fell short, dropping a 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20) decision to the Regina Cougars Saturday night in Winnipeg. The first set was a battle right from the start with Regina holding a slim 8-6 lead at the first technical opnly to see Winnipeg rally to take a 16-14 lead at the second timeout. The Cougars battled back to take the lead at 22-20 and outscore Winnipeg 3-1 down the stretch to win the first set 25-21. The second set was another close affair with the Cougars holding leads of 8-6 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The teams exchanged points for the rest of the set as the Cougars won the set 25-22. In the third set Winnipeg fell behind 8-7 and 16-15 at the two timeouts only to go on a 10-6 run down the stretch, capped off by a big Claire Willerton block to give the Wesmen second set by a score of 25-22. In the fourth set Winnipeg hung in tough but seemed to run out of gas as the Cougars won the fourth set 25-20. Nicola Dirks and DaynaKiesman led the Wesmen with 13 kills each. Tammy Jule led Regina with a match high 19 kills. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-14, while the Cougars improve to 7-9. The Wesmen will have the bye next week and will return to action on Thursday February 8th, as they travel to Brandon to take on the Bobcats.

WESMEN RECOVER TO PULL OUT VICTORY OVER COUGARS

The shooting woes from last night were a thing of the past as the Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars 77-64 Saturday night in Regina. The Wesmen did struggle in the first half shooting 32% from the field, but did a great job on defense holding the Cougars to 22 first half points. Winnipeg led at halftime 38-22. In the second half Regina tried to claw back innto the game but Winnipeg improved their shooting and got key baskets when needed by Uzo Asagwara and Stefanie Timmersman. Asagwara finished with a game high 31 points, including three-three pointers. Stefanie Timmersman recovered from last game and contributed 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 11-7, two points behind the Manitoba Bisons who lead the Great Plains division with a 12-6 record. The Wesmen will be at home next weekend with games against Lethbridge on Friday and Calgary on Saturday. The game on Saturday will be carried live on 1290 CFRW. Game time both nights is 6:15 p.m.

WESMEN COME HOME WITH SPLIT AFTER LOSS TO COUGARS

The Winnipeg Wesmen fell just short of a weekend sweep. The Wesmen were defeated 80-77 by the Regina Cougars Saturday night in Regina. The game was close all thru-out with the Cougars holding a slim 36-33 lead at halftime. The Wesmen did roar back in the second half holding a 51-44 lead with fifteen minutes left in the game. Tne Wesmen saw their lead vanish as Regina went on a 10-3 run to tie the score at 54-54. The Cougars carried the play building a 71-59 lead with just over six minutes to play before Winnipeg made a charge going on a 12-3 run to cut the Cougar lead to three at 74-71. The Cougars extended their lead only to see the Wesmen fight back and have a chance to tie the game but a three point shot with two seconds left did not go in. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 8-10, good enough for second place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will host Lethbridge on Friday night follwed by the Calgary Dino's on saturday night. Both games start at the Duckworth Centre at 8:00 p.m.
