WESMEN SQUEEZE OUT VICTORY OVER CASCADES

It was not pretty but a win is a win. The Winnipeg Wesmen prooved that as they squeezed out a 73-70 victory over Fraser Valley Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The Wesmen went into halftime leading the Cascades 37-31. The Cascades came on fire in the third quarter draining an amazing six-three pointers in a six minute span to make a game of it and tie the score at 55-55 after three quarters. The Wesmen regained a comfortable lead with more than three minutes to play s Jenny Ezirim completed a three point play give the Wesmen a 69-62 lead. There was no quit in Fraser Valley as two more three-pointers closed the gap to 71-68. CIS scoring leader Uzo Asagwara drained a clutch basket to give the Wesmen a five point lead at 73-68. The Cascades were able to score a two-pointer but were unable to go for the game tieing basket as Winnipeg was able to run the clock out and prevail victorious. Asagwara led the Wesmen with a game high 25 points. The Cascades were led by Alyssa Gaukel's 17 points, including five-of-six from three point territory. Fraser Valley finished the game 14-of-27 from three point territory. Winnipeg was 6-of-17, with Caity Gooch leading the Wesmen with four-three pointers. The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 9-6, tied with Manitoba for first place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will face Thompson Rivers (2-15) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:15 p.m.

NASAJPOURS LAST SECOND HEROICS WINS GAME FOR WESMEN  

It is an ending that we have seen many times before. Wesmen guard Erfan Nasajpour drained a clutch three point shot with 16 seconds to play to give the Winnipeg Wesmen a 76-75 victory over Fraser Valley Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen carried the play for most of the first half leading 27-19 with just over four minutes to play in the half. The Cascades did not quit and a clutch three pointer just before halftime closed Winnipeg's lead at halftime to 33-30. In the second half the Wesmen were able to take a commanding 61-51 lead with under nine minutes to play only to see Fraser Valley go on a 16-6 run to tie the score at 67-67 with just under two minutes to play. After both teams exchanged baskets and key free throws the stage was set for Nasajpour who calmly drained the shot to give the Wesmen a 76-75 lead. Fraser Valley did have time to get the go ahead basket but a stiffling Wesmen defence kept the cascades from doing so. Nasajpour finished with a team high 30 points, including 21 points alone in the second half. Jamie Vaughn had a great game for the Cascades finishing with a game high 35 points. The vicory improves Winnipeg's record to 6-9 and sole possesion of second place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will host the winless Thompson Rivers Wolfpack (0-17) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN COMEBACK TO DEFEAT HUSKIES IN FIVE

The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 2-0 defecit to defeat the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 (21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-7) Friday night in Saskatoon. The Wesmen started slow dropping the first two sets but seemed to get stronger as the match went on. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 20 kills. Jayme Menzies added 11 kills, while Shanti Plett had a strong defensive match finishing with 17 defensive digs. The victory by the Wesmen is their second in a row and improves their record to 3-11. The two teams will meet on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m.

WESMEN WORK HARD IN SWEEP OF HUSKIES

The Wesmen had to work for every point in this match but in the end Winnipeg came up with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in Saskatoon. Winnipeg seemed to struggle in the first set as they had a n attack percentage of .172. Winnipeg seemed to get stronger as the match went on. Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with nine kills on 10 attempts and also contributed five blocks. The Wesmen had a strong match serving with Ryan DeBruyn finishing with three aces and Marty Rochon finished with two. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 7-3, good enough for fourth place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen and Huskies will meet Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN RUN AWAY FROM WOLFPACK FOR VICTORY

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen won their second game of the weekend defeating the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 87-57 in front of 1400 spectators at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg on Saturday night. The Wesmen came out on fire in this contest building an early 24-17 lead after the first quarter. The outcome of this game was decided in the second quarter with Winnipeg outscoring the Wolfpack 23-6, and holding a commanding 47-23 lead at halftime. In the second half with the Wesmen in full control, Head Coach Tanya McKay gave her reserve players substantial playing time. CIS scoring leader Uzo Asagwara scored a game-high 26 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three point range. Stefanie Timmersman had a strong game finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Wolfpack were led by Kali Ellis who finished with 15 points and five rebounds. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 10-6, still tied with the Manitoba Bisons for first place in the Great Plains Division standings. The Wolfpack fall to 2-16 on the season. The Wesmen will head to Regina next weekend for a pair of games against the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday.

TOTAL TEAM EFFORT KEY TO WESMEN VICTORY OVER WOLFPACK

The Winnipeg Wesmen received a total team effort as they defeated the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 94-78 Saturday night in front of 2200 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. Five Wesmen players scored in double digits with Dan Shynkaryk and Ivan Saric leading the way with 19 points each. Fourth year guard Erfan Nasajpour contributed a double-double with 14 points and 13 assists. First year players Nick Lother and Peter Lomuro finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. The game started off on the slow end for both teams with the Wesmen and Wolfpack struggling to find the hoop early on. The play did pick up with Winnipeg holding a slim 36-34 lead at halftime. The Wesmen came out on fire in the second half building a 48-40 lead only to see Thompson Rivers go on a 8-2 run to narrow the score to 50-48. The Wesmen were dealt a blow early in the second half when Matt Opalko was given a double technical foul and tossed from the game. The Wolfpack sank all four free throws to tie the score at 52-52. The two teams battled neck and neck until the Wesmen went on a 10-0 run with just over eight minutes to play to take a 78-65 lead. The Wolfpack tried to claw their way back into the game but the Wesmen held their ground to secure the win. The Wolfpack had four players in double-digits led by Charlie Spurr, who finished with a game-high 26 points. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 7-9 and in sole possesion of second place in the Great Plains Division, two points ahead of the 6-10 Manitoba Bisons. The Wolfpack remain winless at 0-18. The Wesmen will take on the Regina Cougars next Friday and Saturday night in Regina.

WESMEN GAINING CONFIDENCE WITH VICTORY OVER HUSKIES

Head Coach Diane Scott and her team are playing with renewed confidence these days. The Wesmen defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (30-32, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21) saturday night for their third straight win. "We played well and we are playing with more confidence", said a happy Diane Scott. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen once again with 29 kills. Libero Shanti Plett continued her fine play as of late finishing with 19 defensive digs. The Wesmen's blocking was improved in this match with the duo of Claire Willerton and Dayna Kiesman contributing key blocks for the Wesmen. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-11 and only two points out of a playoff spot in the Canada West standings. The team will have a challenge on Wednesday night when the host their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons in the volleyball portion of the 16th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Match time is 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-16) for their second sweep in as many nights Saturday night in Saskatoon. "It was a pretty strong team performance", said a pleased Head Coach Larry McKay. Fifth year outside Richard Wiebe led Winnipeg with 14 kills and no errors. Dustin Addison Schneider finished with four service aces. The victory for the Wesmen is their fifth in a row and improves their record to 8-3 to remain in fourth place in the tough Canada West standings. The Wesmen will be at home on Wednesday to face the Manitoba Bisons in the volleyball portion of the 16th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Match time at the Duckworth Centre is 7:30 p.m.
