WESMEN BEATEN BY WOLFPACK

The troubles continue for the Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Volleyball team. The Wesmen were beaten 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19) by the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-11 while the victory improves the Wolfpacks record to 4-7. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 22 kills. Robyn Devlin led the Wolfpack with 14 kills and 22 defensive digs.The Wesmen started the match on a good note playing a well played first set in which they eventually won 25-17. The Wolfpack were able to regroup and keep the Wesmen off balance taking a commanding 16-9 lead at the second technical timeout. The Wesmen did close the gap going on a 6-4 run to make the score 20-15 for Thompson Rivers. The Wolfpack were able to outscore Winnipeg 5-2 down the stretch to take the second set 25-17. The teams battled in the third set with both the Wesmen and Wolfpack having chances to win the set, Thompson Rivers was able to come out on top winning the third set 25-22. In the fourth and final set Winnipeg was unable to draw even falling 25-19 to close out the match. The teams will meet each other Saturday night at 7;30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN COME OFF LONG BREAK WITH VICTORY OVER THOMPSON RIVERS

The Wesmen coming off a long break of over one month looked impressive in defeating the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-22) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The Wesmen last CIS regular season match was back on November 25th when they defeated Trinity Western University.The duo of Ben Schellenberg and Richard Wiebe were a force to deal with. Schellenberg finished with a team high 12 kills, followed by Wiebe who collected 11 kills. Schellenberg also added nine defensive digs.Robin Schoebel led Thompson Rivers with 15 kills. The Wesmen did show some rust early on in the first set but were able to recover to take the first set 25-21. In the second set the Wolfpack were poised to win the set leading 24-21 before the Wesmen fought off four match points to take the second set in a thrilling 28-26 fashion. Winnipeg showed their dominance in the third set with key kills from Alan Ahow lifting the team to a 25-22 deciding set win. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 5-3 while the Wolfpack drop to 4-5. Thhe two teams will wrap up the weekend series Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

ASAGWARA SCORES 35 IN LOSS TO PANDAS

Uzo Asagwara scored a game high 35 points but it was all in alosing cause as the Wesmen were defeated 84-77 by the Alberta Pandas Friday night in Edmonton. The Wesmen played well in the first half shooting 51% from the field and taking a 39-34 lead at halftime. In the second half shooting and foul trouble were the problem for Winnipeg with two starters Jenny Ezirim and Nicki Schutz both fouling out of the game. Winnipeg struggled from the field shooting 34% in the second half. The Pandas outscored the Wesmen 50-35 in the second half to gain the victory. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 8-5 and the Pandas improve to 11-2. The Wesmen will head to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night. game time is 6:15 p.m.

SLOW START HURT WESMEN AGAINST ALBERTA

The Wesmen fell behind early as they were defeated 90-85 by the Alberta Golden Bears friday night in Edmonton. The Wesmen fell behind 44-34 at halftime. The Golden Bears connected for 63% shooting from the field in the first half. The Wesmen played a much better second half and were three points down with twenty seconds to play but a Winnipeg foul sent Alberta to the free throw line where they converted both shots to seal the win. Erfan Nasajpiur led Winnipeg with 27 points, including four-three pointers. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 5-8, tied with Regina for second place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will face the Saskatchewan Huskies tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. in Saskatoon.

WESMEN OVERCOME EARLY SETBACK TO DOMINATE WOLFPACK

The Winnipeg Wesmen rebounded from a shaky first set to defeat the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 3-1 (18-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-11) Saturday night in Winnipeg. The Wesmen started the first set on fire jumping out to a quick 7-1 lead only to see the Wolfpack storm back with seven straight points to take a 8-7 lead at the first timeout. The teams exchanged points until the second technical with the Wolfpack holding on to a 16-15 lead. The Wesmen looked shaky down the stretch with Thompson Rivers going on a 9-3 run to close out the first set at 25-18. In set number two Winnipeg once again jumped out to a 8-1 lead at the first technical and were able to hang on and extend their lead to 16-6 at the second tehnical tineout. Winnipeg dominated the remainder of the set eventually winning 25-14. The Wesmen charge continued in the third set, key blocks by Marty Rochon and Ben Schellenberg kept the Wolfpack off balance with Winnipeg taking the third set 25-17. The fourth and final set was all Winnipeg as they showed their dominance winning the set 25-11. Second year outside Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 11 kills. Richard Wiebe followed with 10 kills and a team leading eight digs. Ben Schellenberg had a strong all-round match combining for nine kills and seven blocks.Robin Schoebel led Thompson Rivers with 12 kills. The victory improves the Wesmens record to 6-3 which places them in fourth place in the tight Canada West standings. The Wolfpack fall to 4-6 on the season. The next action for the Wesmen is next weekend when they travel to Saskatoon for a weekend series against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

WESMEN SWEEP WOLFPACK FOR MUCH NEEDED VICTORY

In a tough season in which wins are hard to come by, the Winnipeg Wesmen earned a much needed 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg Saturday night. The Wesmen had an impressive first set finishing with an attack percentage of .448 and got great plays at the net to win the first set 25-19. In the second set Winnipeg was able to carry the play and take a 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout. The Wesmen took a 21-18 lead before The Wolfpack scored four straight points to take a 22-21 lead. Unlike previous matches this year the Wesmen held their composure and were able to reel off four straight points to take the second set 25-22. In set number three Winnipeg had control early gaining a 16-10 lead at the second technical timeout, the Wolfpack would not fold over as they fought back to stay within two points of the Wesmen. Winnipeg was able to fight and win the third and final set 25-23. The Wesmen were led by Nicola Dirks who finished with a match high 18 kills. Jayme Menzies also had a strong match contributing eight kills and 12 defensive digs. Claire Willerton had a strong game at the net with three solo blocks. The much needed victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-11, while the Wolfpack drop to 4-8. The Wesmen will be on the road next weekend to face the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.

ASAGWARA'S HEROICS NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO HUSKIES

The Wesmen came close but were unable to pull ahead as they were defeated 77-74 by the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night in Saskatoon. For the second game in as many nights Uzo Asagwara had a big night in a losing cause. Asagwara the CIS scoring leader poured in 37 points to lead the Wesmen as no other Winnipeg player scored in double digits. The first half was close with the Huskies taking a slim 33-32 lead at halftime. In the second half Winnipeg made a charge but was unable to pull even as the Huskies went away with the victory. Sarah Crooks had a big game for Saskatchewan finishing with 28 points and 16 rebounds. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 8-6 tied with Manitoba for first place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will host Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers at the Duckworth Centre next Friday and Saturday night.

WESMEN BATTLE HUSKIES AND OFFICIALS IN LOSS

The Wesmen had more than the Saskatchewan Huskies to battle on this night. The Wesmen fell to the Huskies 86-76 in a wild game Saturday night in Saskatoon. The Wesmen recieved seven technical fouls, five players fouling out of the game. The end result was Saskatchewan attempting 59 free throws compared to only 26 for Winnipeg. The trouble started in the first nine minutes of play when Erfan Nasajpour received a technical foul for some heated language at the official, but after that Nasajpour proceeded to kick the ball and picked up a second technical and an ejection from the game. Dan Shynkaryk was also tossed from the game for questioning calls, Shynkaryk played only 15 minutes. Despite the crazy first half the Wesmen trailed 48-39 at halftime. In the second half three more Wesmen players Peter Lomuro, Nick Lother and Mike James all picked up thei fifth fouls and were done for the evening. Head Coach Dave Crook, who also picked up a technical was happy the way his team played "we played hard, the guys played unbelievable". Mike James led Winnipeg with 15 points, followed by Matt opalko with 14. The Wesmen now sport a record of 5-9 and will next see action at home next weekend against Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers.
