BOBCATS NO MATCH FOR WESMEN ON THIS NIGHT

The Winnipeg Wesmen had their way with the Bobcats on this night. The Wesmen defeated Brandon 83-42 in front of 1700 fans at the Duckworth Centre on Thursday night. The Wesmen played inspired basketball from the opening tip to the final buzzer as they honoured their graduating players. CIS scoring leader and fifth year guard Uzo Asagwara, fifth year post Jae Pirnie and fourth year forward Stefanie Timmersman were all honoured before the game. Asagwara led the Wesmen with a game high 27 points followed by Pirnie, who scored a season high 14 points. The Wesmen raced out to a quick 21-12 lead after the first quarter and blew the game wide open in the second outscoring Brandon 22-3 to take a commanding 43-15 lead at halftime. The onsalught continued in the second half with Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay turning to her bench for the majority of the half to finish things up. Fifth year guard Suzanne Campbell led Brandon with 15 points. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 13-8, while the Bobcats are still winless with a record of 0-21. The two teams will wind up the regular season on Saturday night in Brandon. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

BOBCATS WINNING STREAK AT 12 WITH VICTORY OVER WESMEN

The #1 ranked Brandon Bobcats extended their winning streak to twelve games with an impressive 85-76 victory over their arch rivals the Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday night in Winnipeg. Adam Hartman led Brandon with a game high 20 points. Matt Opalko led Winnipeg with 16 points. The high powered Bobcats were never threatened in this game as they made a statement early on building a 27-9 lead midway thru the first half of play. The Wesmen were able to close the gap to nine points at 40-31, but six straight points from Brandon gave the Bobcats a 46-31 lead at halftime. In the second half Brandon continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen by holding on to double-digit lead throughout the second half to claim the victory. The victory by Brandon put a damper on the pre game festivities that saw the Wesmen honour fifth year player Will Bergmann, who was playing in his final regular season home game. The victory was extra special for former Wesmen Assistant Coach and current Head Coach of the #1 ranked team in the country, Barnaby Craddock, who saw his team improve to an impressive 19-2 on the season. The loss by Winnipeg drops their record to 9-12. The two teams will meet up in Brandon on Saturday night to conclude their respective regular season schedules. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

BOBCATS SWEEP STRUGGLING WESMEN

The struggles continue for the Wesmen as they were defeated 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) by the Brandon Bobcats in Brandon on Thursday night. The Wesmen needed the victory to have any chance of making the playoffs this season. Nicola Dirks, as she has done all season long led the Wesmen with a match high 14 kills and 11 defensive digs. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-15. The two teams will wrap up the regular season on saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN COME HOME FROM BRANDON WITH VICTORY

The Winnipeg Wesmen continued their fine play with a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-12) victory over the host Bobcats Thursday night in Brandon. The victory by Winnipeg was a total team effort with four Wesmen players finishing with at least 10 kills. Richard Wiebe led the team with a match high 13 kills, Marty Rochon and Ben Schellenberg finished with 12, while Alan Ahow contributed 10 kills and 14 defensive digs. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 13-4, good enough for a share of second place in the Canada West standings. The Bobcats and Wesmen will wrap up their respective regular season schedules with a match on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:30 p.m.

WESMEN END SEASON ON WINNING NOTE

The Winnipeg Wesmen concluded their regular season with a 3-2 (26-24, 25-17, 26-28, 17-25, 15-9) victory over the Brandon Bobcats, Saturday night in Winnipeg. Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with a match high 21 kills, followed by Dayna Kiesman who finished with a career best 18 kills. Crystal Cornish and Ashley Creighton each had 11 kills for the Bobcats. The first set was a battle with each team having the lead at the technical timeouts, Brandon led 8-4 and Winnipeg took the lead at 16-15. The Wesmen would eventually take the first set 26-24, led by Dirk's seven kills in the set. The Wesmen dominated the second set holding leads of 8-5 and 16-9, before eventually winning the set 25-17. The Bobcats fought back and wonj a tough third set 28-26, which put them back into the match. In the fourth set, Brandon took advantage of some Winnipeg errors and winning the set 25-17 to force a fifth set in the match. Winnipeg was hungry for victory and it showed as a determined Wesmen squad pounded 10 kills in the set on their way to a 15-7 set victory. The victory leaves Winnipeg with a regular season ending record of 5-15. The Bobcats finish the season with a record of 4-16.
Note: With 21 kills in the match, Winnipeg's Nicola Dirks finishes the season with 348 kills which is tops in the CIS.

WESMEN SWEEP BRANDON IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Brandon Bobcats 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-21) in their last regular season game of the season, Saturday night in Winnipeg. Fifth year player Richard Wiebe, who was honoured before the game in this his last regular season home game finished with a team high 10 kills. Marius Oros led the Bobcats with a match high 13 kills. The Wesmen had a relatively easy time in the first set, connecting on 16-of-25 attempts for a attack % of .560 as they won the first set 25-12. The Bobcats gave the Wesmen a little more competition in the second set, but Winnipeg showed their experience fighting back from a slowm start to take the second set 25-19. In the third set Brandon and Winnipeg took turns holding the lead before eventaually the Wesmen were able to take control and win the third set 25-21. The victory leaves Winnipeg with a final regular season record of 14-4. The Bobcats finish the regular season with a record of 4-14. The Wesmen will host either Saskatchewan/Thompson Rivers in the best of three Canada West Semi-Finals beginning next Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time will be announced on Monday.

WESMEN END REGULAR SEASON WITH DECISIVE WIN OVER BRANDON

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team ended the regular season with a bang defeating the Brandon Bobcats 93-55 Saturday night in Brandon. The Bobcats stayed close to the Wesmen in the first half, trailing 39-29 at halftime. In rthe second half the Wesmen exploded for 54 points, while holding Brandon to only 26 second half points to run away with the victory. Uzo Asagwara led Winnipeg with 23 points, including three-three pointers. Suzanne Campbell and Tanysha Robinson led Brandon with 13 points each. The Wesmen finish the regular season with a record of 14-8 and first place in the Great Plains Division. The Bobcats finish the season winless at 0-22. Winnipeg will have the first round bye and will host the Great Plains final against the winner of Regina/Manitoba in the best of three series in two weeks.
Note: Uzo Asagwara finishes the regular season leading the CIS in scoring with 28.0 ppg. It is the second consecutive year that Asagwara led the country in scoring.

WESMEN FALL TO BRANDON, WILL HEAD TO REGINA FOR PLAYOFFS

The Winnipeg Wesmen will head to Regina for the playoffs after dropping a 84-75 decision to the number one ranked Brandon Bobcats Saturday night in Brandon. The Wesmen needed a win or a Regina loss to Manitoba to gain home court but neither scenerio worked out for Winnipeg. The Wesmen stayed within rwach of Brandon in the first half only trailing 37-34 at halftime. In the second half, Winnipeg continued to put pressure on the Bobcats, but were unable to overtake the number one team in the country. Erfan Nasjpour led Winnipeg with 24 points, including four three pointers. Brandon was led by Dany Charlery's 24 points and seven assists. The Wesmen finish the regular season with a 9-13 record and third place in the Great Plains Division. The team will head to Regina to take on the Cougars in the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final beginning on Friday night in Regina.
