TBIRDS DOWN WESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON OPENER
The UBC Thunderbirds flew into Winnipeg and defeated the host Wesmen 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 28-26, 25-18) in the Canada West regular season opener for both teams Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Fifth year left side Stephanie Kurz led UBC with 18 kills and fourth year left side Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 16 kills. The Wesmen had things going their way in the opening set leading for a majority of the set, until UBC tied the set at 22-22 and then went on to score three of the next four points to take the first set 25-23. In the second set Winnipeg got back on track building a 16-9 lead at the second technical timeout. Winnipeg, this set would hang on to the lead for good winning set number two 25-16 to even the match at one set. In the third set both teams battled for every point and each team had chances to close out the set. The T-Birds eventually won the third set 28-26 to take a 2-1 sets lead on the Wesmen. In the fourth set UBC jumped out to a quick 16-9 lead before Winnipeg got on track, with UBC leading 23-12, Dirks and the Wesmen scored five straight points to cut the lead to 23-17. UBC went on to score the two points they needed to take the fourth set 25-18. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre in match two of this weekend series.

WESMEN def British Columbia 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21)WESMEN IMPRESSIVE IN SEASON OPENING WIN AGAINST UBC
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened the Canada West regular season with an impressive 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) victory over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday evening. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 13 kills and four defensive digs. Andrew Bonner was tops for the T-Birds finishing with 11 kills. The Wesmen had control of the match right from the start as they had a hitting percentage of 41% to help them take the opening set 25-19. In the second set the Wesmen had leads of 8-5 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts on their way to a 25-21 set two win.In the third set the T-Birds used powerful kills and great blocking at the net to build a 16-8 lead at the second timeout. After the timeout the Wesmen went on a 4-1 run to close the gap to 17-12. The Wesmen showing confifence and determination went on a 13-4 run to complete the comeback and win the third set 25-21. The Wesmen and the T-Birds will face each other once again on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.AWAY

WESMEN 63 Mary University 49WESMEN OVERCOME SLOW START TO DEFEAT MARY AT U OF M INVITATIONAL
The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 12 point defecit to defeat Mary University 63-49 at the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen were down 33-21 at halftime after connecting on only 27% of their shots from the field, including 0-for-4 from three point territory. In the second half the Wesmen held Mary University to only 16 points and 22% shooting from the field. Winnipeg scored 42 points in the half to complete the comeback. Ivan Saric led the Wesmen with 16 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Roper and Dan Shynkaryk eached scored 12 points to give the Wesmen their first win of the tournament. The Wesmen will face the University of Western Ontario on Saturday night to wrap up the ptournament and the pre-season schedule. The Wesmen open their regular season schedule at home next Thursday night against the Manitoba Bisons.

WESMEN def British Columbia 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-18)WESMEN SWEEP T-BIRDS FOR THE SECOND TIME IN AS MANY NIGHTS
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep with a 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-18) victory over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen were led by Richard Wiebe, who finished with a game high 20 kills while Ben Schellenberg and Martin Rochon each had 12 kills in the victory. Christoph Eichbaum led the T-Birds with 15 kills. The Wesmen battled hard in the first staving off five set points to take the entertaining first set 31-29. In the second set UBC took a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout before the Wesmen battled back to take a 16-13 lead at the second timeout. The Wesmen were able to hold off the T-Birds and control the remainder of the set on their way to a 25-22 set two win. The Wesmen simply dominated the third set as they held commanding leds of 8-2 and 16-6 at the technical timeouts. The T-Birds did make a late 6-0 run in the set to close the gap to 23-16. The T-Birds were not able to get any closer as they took the third and final set 25-18. The Wesmen had a team hitting attack percentage of .427, including Wiebe and Schellenberg who finished with attack percentages of .667 and .688 respectiveley. The Wesmen improve to 2-0 early on in the season while UBC falls to 0-2. The Wesmen will travel across town to battle their rivals the Manitoba Bisons next Friday evening.

The Winnipeg Wesmen recovered from last nights loss to defeat the UBC Thunderbirds 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-22) Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Nicola Dirks had 18 kills and eight digs to lead the Wesmen and Stephanie Kurz led the T-Birds with 10 kills and 10 defensive digs. The Wesmen had complete control in the first set going on a 8-0 run to take a commanding 11-3 lead. After Winnipeg led 16-7 at the second technical timeout, UBC went on a 6-0 run to close the Wesmen lead to 16-13. That is as close as the T-Birds would come as the Wesmen held on for a 25-20 first set win. In the second set the Wesmen stood tall and came away with some timely kills and great defense at the net taking the second set 25-23. In the third set UBC jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but the Wesmen were able to fight and close the gap to 8-7 in UBC's favour at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg was able to take the lead at 16-15 and they would not look back from there. After a Jayme Menzies ace gave the Wesmen a 22-21 lead, third year middle Dayna Kiesman came up with a huge block followed by a kill to give the Wesmen a 25-22 deciding set three win. The win even's the Wesmen's record to 1-1. The Wesmen will take on the number one team in the country the Manitoba Bisons next Friday at the University of Manitoba.

WESMEN 73 Western Ontario 87WESMEN FINISH PRESEASON ON A LOSING NOTE
The Wesmen dug themselves into a hole early on and could not recover. The Wesmen fell behind by 12 points at halftime as the University of Western Ontario defeated the Wesmen 87-73 in the teams final preseason game at the University of Manitoba Invitational. The Wesmen fell behind 47-35 at halftime. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 25 points and Ryan Roper had 14 points. The loss drops the Wesmen's preseason record to 5-2 and they will now prepare to face the Manitoba Bisons in the Canada West regular season opener on Thursday at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 70 University of Mary 81WESMEN DROP FIRST GAME IN BISMARCK NORTH DAKOTA
The University of Mary defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 81-70 in an exhibition game held Friday night in Bismarck, North Dakota. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 19 points. The two teams will battle tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m before the Wesmen head home to prepare for the Canada West regular season opener against the Manitoba Bisons on Thursday night.

The Wesmen concluded their preseason with a 79-65 loss to then University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota Sunday evening. The Wesmen will now prepare for their regular season opener on Thursday night when they host the Manitoba Bisons.
