danWESMEN OPEN MIDWAY TOURNAMENT WITH DECISIVE VICTORY

The Winnipeg Wesmen men's basketball team opened up the Midway Chrysler Invitational with a decisive 76-57 victory over the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Friday night in front of 1650 spectators at the Duckworth Centre." We played a great second half, the guys really played hard", said Wesmen assistant coach Garth McAlpine. "We played a lot better than we did last weekend in Kingston." Fourth year post Dan Shynkaryk led the way for the Wesmen scoring a game high 19 points, including 13 in the first half. Guards Erfan Nasajpour and Ryan Roper also had impressive home debuts scoring 13 and 12 points respectively. The Thunderwolves trailed by only 10 points at halftime by a score of 37-27. Winnipeg only manged to connect on 33% (13-of-39) from the field in the first half. In the second half Head Coach Dave Crook gave his starting unit limited playing time as all of the Wesmen spares so substantial minutes in the second half. First year guard/forward Matthew Nobles led Lakehead with 17 points. The Wesmen will face the Jamestown College Jimmies Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. and the Lakehead University Thunderwolves will battle the Manitoba Bisons at 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN DROP FIRST MATCH AT BISON INVITATIONAL

The men's volleyball team dropped their first match of the Bison Invitational Tournament 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 28-26) to Dalhousie Friday afternoon at the University of Manitoba. " We let many opportunities slip away in the match", said Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay. Ben Schellenberg was a force on the offensive side finishing with 24 kills in the match. Jon Kasdorf was superb on defense coming away with 17 defensive digs.

WESMEN BEAT CROSS TOWN RIVALS TO EVEN RECORD AT BISON INVITATIONAL

The Wesmen Men's Volleyball team evened their tournament record to 1-1 with a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22) victory over their cross town rivals the University of Manitoba Bisons. The match was closely contested with both teams not giving up and fighting point for point. The Wesmen were led on offence by Marty Rochon who pounded home 13 kills. Ben Schellenberg was a standout on defense finishing with seven blocks. The Wesmen will play two matches on Saturday, in the morning match the Wesmen will face Ryerson and at 5:45 p.m. the team will wind up the tournament against Alberta.

erfWESMEN DEFEAT JAMESTOWN TO FINISH MIDWAY TOURNAMENT UNBEATEN 

The Wesmen Men's basketball team made it a perfect 2-0 at the Midway Chrysler Invitational by downing the Jamestown College Jimmies 71-58 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Fourth year guard Erfan Nasajpour was superb all evening finishing with a game high 19 points and six assists. The Wesmen took full control of the game early on building a 20-9 lead midway thru the first half. The Jimmies would not lay down as they went on a 15-5 run to close the gap to 25-24. The Wesmen clamped down and after a superb defensive play by Ivan Saric, Nasajpour scored five straight points to propel the Wesmen to a 41-26 halftime lead. In the second the Wesmen scored three-three pointers and were able to hold off the Jimmie's attack as they claimed their second victory of the tournament and aldo the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament Championship. Erfan Nasajpour was named MVP and a tournament all-star and post Dan Shynkaryk was also named to the all-star team.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL PULL OUT TOUGH WIN AGAINST RYERSON

The men's volleyball team improved their tournament record to 2-1 with a dramatic 3-2 (29-31, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10) victory over Ryerson Saturday morning at the Bison Invitational Tournament. "It was a good performance by the whole team", said Head Coach Larry McKay. Fourth year standout Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen attack with 21 kills and Dustin Addison-Schneider had a great match at the net finishing with five blocks.

GOLDEN BEARS SWEEP WESMEN IN TOURNAMENT FINALE

The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-13) in the teams final match Saturday evening at the Bison Invitational Tournament. Despite the loss Head Coach Larry McKay is pleased with the weekend play of his team. "I am pleased with the results from the weekend, we have come a long way this tournament", said McKay. First year outside Michael Mallin led the Wesmen with eight kills. Fourth year player Richard Wiebe was named to the tournament all-star team. The Wesmen will now focus their attention to next weekend when they open their 2006-07 Canada West regular season at home against the UBC Thunderbirds.
