SPARTANS UPSET WESMEN AT THE BUZZER

The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the home town Winnipeg Wesmen 61-60 on a lay up at the buzzer Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. Becky Atkinson, who scored 24 points to lead the Spartans scored the lay up just as time expired. The Wesmen were led by Uzo Asagwara with 24 points and Stefanie Timmersman who added a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. The Wesmen came out on fire in this contest jumping out to a quick 8-1 lead with the game just barely four minutes old. The Wesmen carried the play into the second quarter led by the duo of Asagwara and Timmersman who helped the Wesmen grab a 35-29 adavantage at halftime. In the second half the Wesmen were guilty of several turnovers, poor shooting and outrebounded by the Spartans. The Wesmen were able to connect on only 30% shooting from the field in the half which led to Trinity Western outscoring Winnipeg 32-25 in the second half. The victory improves the Spartans record to 4-5 while the loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-3. The Spartans will travel across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons tomorrow night and the Wesmen will play host to the Simon Fraser University Clan at 6:15 p.m. The game will be carried live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the colour commentary.

SPARTANS HOLD OFF WESMEN CHARGE FOR VICTORY

The Winnipeg Wesmen played better in the second half and just fell short as they were defeated 91-87 by the Trinity Western University Spartans Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The Wesmen had a rough first half trailing 42-34 at halftime. Winnipeg turned the ball over 11 times which led directly to 17 Trinity Western points in the first half. In the second half the Wesmen came out on fire scoring back-to-back three pointers to close the gap to 45-40. The duo of Dan Shynkaryk and Erfan Nasajpour led the charge in the second half as the Wesmen grabbed their first lead of the game at 65-64 at the mid-way point of the half. The Spartans were able to take advantage of Wesmen turnovers and regained the lead once and for all on their way to the victory. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 26 points and 11 assists. Dan Shynkaryk also had a double-double finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 2-5 while the victory pushes the Spartans above .500 at 5-4. Winnipeg will host Simon Fraser University tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. The Spartans will take on the Manitoba Bisons.

WESMEN BATTLE HARD IN LOSS TO SIMON FRASER 

The tough season continues for the Wesmen Women's Volleyball Team. Winnipeg was defeated 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) by Simon Fraser University Friday night in British Columbia. " We played better than last week and we will keep on fighting", said Head Coach Diane Scott. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 18 kills and nine defensive digs. Jayme Menzies was next with 11 kills and five defensive digs. The loss is the fifth in a row for the Wesmen who sport a record of 1-7 on the regular season. The Wesmen will battle the Clan tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. (Winnipeg time).

SPARTANS COMEBACK TO DEFEAT WESMEN

The Wesmen had a 2-0 lead against the defending National Champions Trinity Western University Spartans but were unable to close out the match dropping a tough 3-2 (20-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-10) decision to the Spartans. Ben Schellenberg and Richard each had strong matches finishing with 17 kills apiece. The loss drops the Wesmens record to an even 3-3. The two teams will battle Saturday night in Langley. Match time is 10:00 (Winnipeg Time)

SLOW FIRST HALF WESMENS DOWNFALL IN LOSS TO SIMON FRASER

The Winnipeg Wesmen played a poor first half and that was the teams downfall as the third ranked team in the country, Simon Fraser University Clan defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 78-75 in front of 2000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night in Winnipeg. Simon Fraser led 42-29 at halftime. The Clan connected for seven-three pointers in the half to keep the Wesmen off balance. In the second half the Wesmen fell further behind by as much as 20 points. After a technical foul was called on Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay, the team responded by going on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 55-42. The Wesmen then let their emotions get out of hand as Jenny Ezirim was called for two technical fouls which led to four SFU points to give the Clan a 63-49 lead after three quarters. In the fourth quarter the Wesmen were able to take advantage of some cold Simon Fraser shooting and were able to close the gap to three points before time ran out on Winnipeg. Fifth year fguard Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with a game high 35 points and five steals. Simon Fraser was led by Lani Gibbons who scored 18 points while adding eight assists. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-4 while the Clan improve to 9-1 so far in the regular season. The Wesmen will next see action on Thursday night as they travel to Brandon to take on the winless Brandon Bobcats.

NASAJPOUR ON FIRE IN WESMEN DRAMATIC WIN OVER SIMON FRASER

Winnipeg guard Erfan Nasajpour scored a career high 45 points to lead the Wesmen to a dramatic 84-79 overtime victory against the Simon Fraser University Clan in front of 2300 loud spectators at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg Saturday night. Nasajpour scored 25 of his 45 points in the first half helping the Wesmen build a slim 44-40 lead at halftime. Both teams were shooting well in the first half with the Wesmen connecting on 60% from the field and the Clan connecting on 58% shooting. The second half was a back and fourth affair with both teams matching each other basket for basket. Ryan Roper drained a clutch three pointer with 1:42 left to give the Wesmen a 73-72. After the Clan tied it up at 73, Nasajpour drove thru the lane to sink a driving lay up with just over a minute left to give the Wesmen a two point lead at 75-73. Aaron Christensen who led the Clan with 34 points hit a jumper with 39 seconds left to force the game into overtime. In overtime the Wesmen outscored the Clan 9-4 to earn the victory. The victory gives Winnipeg a 3-5 record while the Clan drop to 5-5. The Wesmen will travel to Brandon on Thursday to face the top team in the Great Plains Division, the Brandon Bobcats.

WESMEN DROP SECOND STRAIGHT TO SIMON FRASER 

For the second consecutive night the Wesmen played hard but were defeated 3-0 (33-31, 28-26, 25-22) by the Simon Fraser University Clan in Vancouver Saturday night. " We played well enough to win but were unable to finish when we had chances", said Head Coach Diane Scott. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with a match high 26 kills. Libero Shanti Plett had a strong match defensiveley finishing with a team high 19 defensive digs. The loss drops the teams record to 1-8. The Wesmen will travel to the West Coast once again for a pair of weekend matches against the Trinity Western University Spartans.

WESMEN HANG ON TO DEFEAT DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the defending national champions, Trinity Western University Spartans 3-2 (25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 19-25, 15-13) in Langley British Columbia  on Saturday night. The Wesmen won the first two sets and than dropped the next two but were able to hang on and win the fifth and deciding set. Richard Wiebe led the Wesmen with 16 kills. The victory improves the teams record to 4-3.
