jessWESMEN ROLL OVER BISONS IN REGULAR SEASON OPENER

The Winnipeg Wesmen had complete control of this game after only ten minutes of play. The Wesmen beat their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons 85-65 in the Canada West regular season opener on Thursday night in front of 1550 fans at the Duckworth Centre . The Wesmen led 23-7 after the first quarter and expanded the lead to twenty points at 48-28 at halftime. Fifth year guard Uzo Asagwara scored 17 of her game high 23 points in the first half. It was a total team effort that earned the Wesmen the victory on this night. Four players scored in double digits including Jessica Stromberg who had her best game as a Wesmen scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds.Second year guard Randie Gibson was on fire from three point land nailing four three pointers on her way to scoring 12 points. The Bisons were led by fifth year forward Sarah Holder who scored 12 points and Rachel Hart added 10 points in the loss for the Bisons. The Wesmen will next see action on Saturday evening when they travel across town to the University of Manitoba to face the Bisons. Game time is 6:15 p.m.

WESMEN DROP UGLY GAME TO CROSS TOWN RIVAL BISONS

The Wesmen dropped an ugly 56-54 decision to the Manitoba Bisons in front of 1900 screaming fans at the Duckworth Centre on Thursday evening. The first half saw both struggle with each shooting barely above 20% in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Wesmen did manage to hold a 24-19 lead at halftime. In the second half the Bisons seemed to take the momentum away from the Wesmen as they managed to grab their first lead of the game three minutes into the half by a score of 26-24. Third year guard Ryan Roper drained a three pointer to give the Wesmen a 29-28 lead and one that they would hold on to for dear life. The Wesmen surrendered the lead for good after Myron Dean of the Bisons threw down a highlight reel dunk to tie the score at 48-48. The Wesmen did close the gap to one point when Roper sank a three pointer with 36 seconds left to cut the Bisons lead to 56-54 which turned out to be the final score. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 16 points and Ivan Saric was a monster on the boards grabbing 17 rebounds. Darcy Coss led the Bisons with 17 points and Brian Crowe had a double-double scoring 14 points and adding 14 rebounds. The Wesmen and Bisons will meet on Saturday night at the University of Manitoba. Tip off is at 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN SUFFER LOSS TO RIVAL BISONS

The Wesmen Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 32-30) decision to their arch rivals the Manitoba Bisons Friday night at the University of Manitoba. The Wesmen were led by fourth year left side Nicola Dirks who had a match high 22 kills in the loss. Second year libero Shanti Plett led the Wesmen on defense with 13 defensive digs. Erin Nieuwenburg led the way for the Bisons finishing with 15 kills. The Bisons raced out to a quick 8-3 and 16-13 leads at the timeouts in the first set. Winnipeg fought back to close to within a point at 20-19 but the Bisons controlled the remainder of the set winning by a score of 25-20. In the second set Winnipeg was close at 8-6 at the first technical timeout but Manitoba reeled off point after point and expanded their lead to 16-9 at the second timeout. Manitoba dominated the remainder of the set, eventually winning 25-13. The Wesmen and Bisons battled hard in the third set with each team having numerous chances to take the set. The Bisons eventually won the battle winning the third and final set 32-30. The loss for the Wesmen was a costly one as second year right side and last seasons Canada West Rookie of the Year Marlee Bragg suffered a knee injury and will be evaluated. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 1-2 early on in the Canada West regular season. The Wesmen will travel to Alberta next weekend to take on the University of Alberta Pandas.

andrewWESMEN KNOCK OFF BISONS TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

The fifth ranked Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the third ranked Manitoba Bisons 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23) in a dramatic match on Friday evening at the University of Manitoba. The Wesmen earned the victory with a total team effort as four players had ten or more kills in the match. Andrew Town and Richard Wiebe led the way with 11 kills each while Ben Schellenberg and Martin Rochon each had 10 kills. Fourth year outside Trevor Shaw was a force at the net coming up with three solo blocks. Joshua Klassen led the Bisons with a match high 13 kills. The Wesmen raced out to quick leads in the first set and never looked back as they took the opening set by a score of 25-15. The Bisons made adjustments in the second set and overpowered the Wesmen to take the set 25-23 to even the match. In the third set both tems battled hard for every point, with key kills and powerful blocking at the net. The Wesmen were able to prevail to win the set 25-22. The fourth set was either teams for the taking with the Wesmen looking to finish the match and the Bisons looking to force a fifth set. The Wesmen were able to prevail and win the fourth set 25-23. The Wesmen now sport a perfect 3-0 record and will head to Alberta to take on the Alberta Golden Bears in a weekend series next Friday and Saturday.

uzoASAGWARA SCORES 37 POINTS IN LOSS TO BISONS

Fifth year guard Uzo Asagwara scored a game high 37 points, but it was not enough as the Manitoba Bisons defeated the Wesmen 72-70 Saturday night at the University of Manitoba. The Wesmen buried themselves into a hole early on when the Bisons jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead barely four minutes into the first quarter. The Wesmen were able to regroup as they outscored Manitoba 18-9 down the stretch to tie the score at 18-18 after the first quarter. The Wesmen were able to gain their first lead of the game one and half minutes into the second quarter by a score of 22-20. The Bisons were able to gain the momentum back and took a 39-36 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the third quarter Manitoba scored 14 points before the Wesmen scored their first basket of the quarter, just over seven minutes into the third quarter. The Wesmen only scored 13 points in the third quarter with all the points coming from Uzo Asagwara, who single handedly kept the Wesmen in the game trailing 61-49 after three quarters. The Wesmen were able to fight back and even took the lead at 70-69 with just over a minute to play in the quarter. The Bisons got the big play they needed when Rachel Hart came up with a steal and a basket with 40 seconds to play to give the Bisons the lead once and for all. Hart led the Bisons with 20 points. Asagwara also had a solid game defensiveley finishing with four steals. Jae Pirnie was a force for the Wesmen on the boards finishing with 10 rebounds. The Wesmen now stand with a record of 1-1 and will face the Regina Cougars next Friday and Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

erfNASAJPOUR LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER MANITOBA

Wesmen super guard Erfan Nasajpour took the team on his back and helped carry them to an impressive 83-65 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night at the University of Manitoba. Nasajpour scored 24 of his 32 points in the first half as the Wesmen built a 43-29 lead at halftime. The Wesmen shot a respectible 44% from the field in the first half including connecting on five-of-eight three point attempts. In the second half the Wesmen continued their assault and got some great contributions from a few of Head Coach Dave Crook's first year players. Nick Lother scored 12 points in the half and Peter Lomuro was equally as impressive finishing with eight points and also providing the Wesmen with great defensive play. Ivan Saric once again was a rebounding machine leading the Wesmen with a game high 12 rebounds. Darcy Coss led the Bisons with 18 points. The Wesmen now hold a record of 1-1 and will host the Regina Cougars in a key divisional matchup next Friday and Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre,
