Calgary def WESMEN 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22)

WESMEN FALL IN STRAIGHT SETS TO DINOS

The struggles continued for the Winnipeg Wesmen as they were defeated 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) by the Calgary Dinos Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. Calgary took advantage of several Winnipeg errors in the first set building leads of 8-5 and 16-7 at the timeouts as they went on to take the opening set 25-15. In the second set Winnipeg put up a better fight and only trailed 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The Dinos were able to hold off the Wesmen and eventuallly won the second set 25-21. Once again in the third set Winnipeg dug themselves into a hole falling behind 8-3 at the first technical but fighting back to trail by three 16-13 at the second timeout. Calgary was able to regain their focus and eventually took the closing set 25-22. Fifth year right side Joanna Niemczewska led the Dinos with 10 kills and third year left side Lauren Perry had a strong match defensiveley finishing with a match high 16 digs. The Wesmen were led by third year middle Dayna Kiesman' s 12 kills and Nicola Dirks who finished with 11 kills. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 1-5 while the victory improves Calgary's record to a perfect 5-0 on the season. The two teams will meet Saturday afternoon at 4:00 (Winnipeg time) for the wrap up match to the weekend series.

WESMEN UNABLE TO RECOVER FROM SLOW START IN LOSS TO T-BIRDS

The Winnipeg Wesmen dug themselves into a hole early on and were not able to recover as they were defeated 80-70 by the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Vancouver. The Wesmen did play better after the first quarter as they held the T-Birds to only nine points in the second quarter. Fifth year guard Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 24 points. The loss drops the Wesmen's record to 3-2. The team will now head to Victoria to take on the Victoria Vikes saturday night at 8:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time).

WESMEN LATE RALLY COMES UP SHORT IN LOSS TO UBC

The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 19 point defecit but fell just short in a 80-78 loss to to the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Vancouver. Fourth year guard Erfan Nasajpour was impressive scoring a game-high 32 points, including nine in the final three-and-a-half minutes as the Wesmen made a late charge. Three Wesmen post players fouled out including Dan Shynkaryk who was limited to just six points in 20 minutes of play. Aside from scoring 32 points, Nasajpour grabbed eight rebounds and came away with five steals. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 2-3 and will head to Victoria to take on the Victoria Vikes on saturday night. Game time is 10:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

CALGARY DOWNS WESMEN IN STRAIGHT SETS

The Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21) to complete a weekend sweep of the hometown Wesmen Saturday evening in Winnipeg. The Wesmen hung in tough in the first set only trailing 8-6 at the first technical timeout. Afterthe timeout the Wesmen seemed to unravel as Calgary took advantage of some Wesmen errors to run the score to 16-11 at the second timeout. Calgary eventually took the first set 25-15. The second set was more of the same with the Dinos holding leads of 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen were unable to close the gap in the set that Calgary won 25-18 to grab a two sets to none lead. In the third set Winnipeg played with a lot more fight and made it close at 21-20 until the Dinos scored four of the last five points to win the third and final set 25-21. Julie Young led Calgary on offence with 16 kills and Lauren Perry was solid on nthe defensive side of the net finishing with a match high 12 digs. The Wesmen were led by Nicola Dirks who finished with 15 kills and seven defensive digs. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 1-6 while the victory improves Calgary's record to a perfect 6-0.

WESMEN REBOUND WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER VIKES  

The Wesmen were impressive in defeating the Victoria Vikes 81-61 Saturday night in Victoria B.C. Uzo Asagwara was om fire leading the Wesmen with 38 points and seven steals. The game was close in the first half with Winnipeg holding a slim 39-35 lead at halftime. In the second half Winnipeg was on fire outscoring the Vikes 42-29 to secure the victory. " It was a great road win for us", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.
The win improves the teams record to 4-2 on the regular season. The Wesmen will play host to the Trinity Western University Spartans on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 66   Victoria 78

WESMEN LOSE SECOND GAME IN BC

The Wesmen were unable to gain a split in BC as they were defeated 78-66 by the Victoria Vikes on Saturday night in Victoria. Ivan Saric led the Wesmen with 23 points on nine-of-eleven shooting from the field. Erfan Nasajpour played all the games 40 minutes and scored 17 points in the contest. The Wesmen trailed by three points at halftime 36-33 before Victoria outscored the Wesmen 42-33 in the second half. The Wesmen seemed to have troubles from three point territory only being able to connect on two-of-nine (22%). The loss drops the Wesmen's record to 2-4 on the season. The Wesmen will next see action at home next Friday when they battle the Trinity Western University Spartans at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
