WESMEN USE LONG BALL TO RUN OVER COUGARS
The Winnipeg Wesmen connected on eight three pointers, including seven in the first half to propel them to a 84-71 victory over the Regina Cougars Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The Wesmen connected on 7-of-12 three pointers in the first half but only held a slim 44-40 lead at halftime. First year guard Caitlin Gooch, making her first ever CIS start connected on 4-of-5 three point attempts in the first half. In the second half the Wesmen outscored the Cougars 40-31 to lift them to the victory. Fourth year forward Stefanie Timmersman had her best game of the season finishing with a game high 22 points, including 11 points in the third quarter. CIS scoring leader Uzo Asagwara contributed with 20 points and Nina Adusei was solid on the boards coming up with nine rebounds. The Cougars were led by first year forward Gabrielle Gheyssen with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Wesmen improve their record to 2-1 and the Cougars remain winless with a record of 0-3. The two teams will meet up on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

WESMEN STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO COUGARS
The Winnipeg Wesmen started strong but struggled down the stretch as they were defeated 82-64 by the visiting Regina Cougars at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. The Wesmen shot a respectible 55% from the field in the first half and were only trailing 39-35 at halftime. The second half was a different story as the Cougars outrebounded and outhustled the Wesmen at both ends of the court. The Cougars held a double digit lead for a majority of the second half. The Wesmen were only able to cut the lead to nine points with three minutes to go before the Cougars ran away with the victory. The Wesmen were led by fourth year post Dan Shynkaryk's 17 points, while guard Erfan Nasajpour scored 14 in a losing cause. First year guard Jeffrey Lukomski had a solid game for the Cougars finishing with a game high 21 points, including five-of seven from the three point territory. The loss drops the Wesmen's record to 1-2. The victory by Regina is their first of the season as their record now stands at 1-2 also. The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN UNDEFEATED STREAK SNAPPED BY GOLDEN BEARS
The Wesmen Men's Volleyball team had their three match regular season winning streak snapped as the Alberta Golden Bears beat the Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) Friday night in Edmonton. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 11 kills, followed by Richard Wiebe with eight kills. " We did not play poorly it's just Alberta played very well", said Head Coach Larry McKay. The Wesmen now stand with a record of 3-1 and the Alberta Golden Bears improve to a perfect 5-0. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. Winnipeg time)

WESMEN PUT IN GREAT EFFORT IN LOSS TO PANDAS
The Wesmen Women's Volleyball team put in a great effort, but it was a not enough as the team dropped a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18) decision to the Alberta Pandas on Friday night in Edmonton. The team was playing it's first match without injured player Marlee Bragg and despite the loss Head Coach Diane Scott had some kind words about her team. "We did some good things despite only having four days to turn our game plan around (due to the injury to Bragg), setter Courtney Desaulniers did a great job distributing the ball as every player had at least one kill", stated Scott. Nicola Dirks led the way with a match high 16 kills and 14 digs. Jayme Menzies had 11 kills. The Wesmen sport a record of 1-3 while the victory improves the Pandas record to 5-0. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. Winnipeg time).

TOTAL TEAM EFFORT GIVES WESMEN VICTORY OVER REGINA
The Winnipeg Wesmen received a total team effort on this night as they defeated the Regina Cougars 83-73 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Four Wesmen players scored in double digits. Fifth year guard Uzo Asagwara led the scoring brigade with a game high 23 points. Second year forward Jessica Stromberg was on fire connecting for 20 points, including five-three pointers. Jenny Ezirim was solid on defence finishing with eight steals while collecting 13 points and Stefanie Timmersman celebrating her birthday on this night contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Gabrielle Gheyssen led the Cougars once again with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Wesmen looked like they were going to run away with this game easrly on as they jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead barely three minutes into the game. The Wesmen held a 22-15 lead after the first quarter. Winnipeg continued their assault early in the second quarter pulling ahead by a score of 31-19 midway thru the second period. After a timeout the Cougars rebounded and outscored the Wesmen 16-3 down the stretch to grab a 35-34 lead at halftime. Jessica Stromberg took the game over in the third quarter scoring 12 points in helping the Wesmen tie the score at 56-56 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter the Wesmen put the game out of reach by connecting on three consecutive three point shots to give the Wesmen a lead they would not give up. The win improves the Wesmens record to 3-1 while the Cougars remain winless at 0-4.

NASAJPOUR COMES TO THE RECUE TO GIVE WESMEN THRILLING VICTORY
Super guard Erfan Nasajpour forced the game into overtime and than took the game into his hands as the Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars 78-68 in a very entertaining game at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night. Nasajpour hit a floating jump shot with four seconds left to tie the score at 62-62 and force the game into extra time. The Wesmen took full control of the game in the extra period led by Nasjpour's 11 points and Nick Lothers five points in the overtime period. The Wesmen trailed 36-30 at halftime after connecting on only 34% of their shots from the field in the first half. In the second half the Wesmen hit key foul shots down the stretch including three by Ivan Saric which kept the Wesmen in the game. The Cougars struggled in the second half connecting on only 27% from the field. Nasajpour played all 45 minutes of the game and scored a game high 29 points, while collecting eight steals and five assists. First year guard Nick Lother scored 13 points and Ivan Saric once again led the Wesmen in the rebounding department collecting 12 rebounds. The Cougars were led by the duo of Jamal Williams and Paul Schubach both finishing with 16 points. The victory improves the Wesmens record to 2-2 and the Cougars drop to 1-3 on the season.AWAY

WESMEN SHOW IMPROVEMENT IN LOSS TO PANDAS
The Women's Volleyball team played hard but dropped a tough 3-1 (25-12, 20-25, 25-21, 28-26) decision to the Alberta Pandas Saturday night in Edmonton. The Wesmen did have chances to win more than one set but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Nicola Dirks had a great match finishing with a match high 29 kills to lead the Wesmen. The Wesmen lost both matches to the Pandas this weekend but Head Coach Diane Scott is satisfied with the effort. " We played hard and we had a better weekend than a lot of people expected", stated Scott. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 1-4 on the season. The Wesmen will host the Calgary Dinos next weekend at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN DROP SECOND STRAIGHT MATCH TO ALBERTA
The Wesmen dropped their second match of the weekend to the tough Alberta Golden Bears 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19) in Edmonton on Saturday night. " We played against a tough team and learned a few things this weekend", said Head Coach Larry McKay. "We now know what we have to work on in practice", stated McKay. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 18 kills and Richard Wiebe finished the match with eight defensive digs. The loss drops the teams record to 3-2. Winnipeg will have the bye next weekend and will get ready to face the top ranked Trinity Western University Spartans in two weeks in Langley.
