WESMEN def Brandon 3-2 (26-28,22-25,25-18,25-15,15-11)The Winnipeg Wesmen came from two sets down to defeat the Brandon Bobcats 3-2 (26-28,22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-11) Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 7-4, while the loss drops the Bobcats to 3-8. Ben Schellenberg with 18 kills and Jarrod Small with 17 kills led the Wesmen comeback. Al Hart led the Bobcats with 15 kills. Schellenberg was a force defensiveley as he finished with a game-high 14 digs. The Wesmen seemed have things go there way in the first set as they raced out to a 10-3 lead. After a Bobcat timeout Joel Small of the Bobcats led a 5-0 run to pull Brandon to within two points at 10-8. The teams exchanged points to the technical timeout where Winnipeg led 16-14. The teams both had chances to win the set as they battled back and fourth before Brandon eventually took the first set 28-26. In the second set Winnipeg led early but Brandon took a 18-16 lead at the second technical. The Wesmen fell behind after that as Brandon went on to win the set 25-22. In the third set Larry McKay made some changes to his starting unit inserting Alan Ahow and Paul Kjos, who both made an impact in the third set that the Wesmen won 25-18. In set number four the Wesmen held a tight 8-6 lead at the first timeout before going on a 8-2 run to take control of the match by a score of 16-8 at the second technical. The Wesmen got key kills from Schellenberg and timely blocks by Jarrod Small to take the fourth set 25-15.In the fifth and final set both teams gave it all they had but in the end the Wesmen outdueled the Bobcats to take the fifth and deciding set 15-11. The Wesmen will next see action on Saturday January 14th, when they head across town to face the University of Manitoba Bisons.
