WESMEN 69 Manitoba 83
The Wesmen headed across town to the University of Manitoba to face their rivals the Manitoba Bisons. The Wesmen were defeated 83-69 in a game that had no meaning in the standings for the team. Uzo Asagwara continued her fine play pouring in 35 points in a losing cause. The Bisons had the edge under the boards as they outreboounded the Wesmen 44-34. The loss drops the Wesmen's record to 13-6, still good enough for first place in the Great Plains Division and also for a first round playoff bye. The Bisons record improves to 11-8. The two teams will meet in the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge Saturday night at 6:15 at the Duckworth Centre. It will be the final regular season games for both teams before the Canada West Playoffs begin the following week.
Men's Basketball @ MANITOBA
WESMEN 80 Manitoba 75
The men's basketball team clinched a playoff spot with a 80-75 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Thursday evening at the U of M. The Wesmen played an all-round solid game and were on fire shooting, by connecting on 51% of their shots from the field. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 20 points and Erfan Nasajpour had a double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The victory improves the teams record of 7-12 and places them in third place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen and Bisons will face each other in the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The game will be broadcast live on 1290 CFRW with the play by play action with Paul Edmonds and Steve Thompson starting at 8:00 p.m.

Women's Volleyball vs CALGARY
WESMEN def Calgary 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-11)
The Wesmen were down but not out as they defeated the number three ranked Calgary Dinos 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-11) in a highly entertaining match Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg. The first set was relatively close with both teams exchanging points. The Dinos led 8-7 at the first technical timeout before Winnipeg battled back to take at slim 16-15 lead at the second technical. The two teams were locked at 23-23 before Calgary closed out the set winning 25-23. In the second set Winnipeg fell behind 8-5 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Calgary went on to score four straight points after that on there way to a 25-21 set victory. In set number three the Wesmen held leads of 8-7 and 16-11. The Wesmen started making less errors and got solid play in the set from Kaitlyn Jackson and Nicola Dirks on their way to taking the third set 25-23. In set number four Winnipeg held a slim 8-6 lead at the first technical before going on a 12-4 run to open up a 20-10 lead on the Dinos. calgary chipped away at the Wesmen lead and went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 21-18. The Dinos committed two serving errors down the stretch which helped the Wesmen win the set 26-24. In the fifth and deciding set Winnipeg held a 8-5 lead at the timeout and strong play down the stretch from Jackson and Marlee Bragg gave the Wesmen a 15-11 set win. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 16 kills. Lauren Perry led the Dinos with 24 kills. The victory improves the Wesmens record to 12-7 while Calgary falls to 13-6. The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN def Calgary 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13)
The Winnipeg Wesmen simply dominated in defeating the Calgary Dinos 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. Richard Wiebe led the Wesmen with 10 kills and Marc De Spiegelaere came up with eight digs. Steve Gotch led Calgary with eight kills. The Wesmen were never threatened in the first set as they had the lead at both technical timeouts 8-5 and 16-8, on their way to a 25-12 set victory. In set number two Calgary put up a better fight but the Wesmen attack was too much for the Dinos to handle and the Wesmen took the second set 25-19. In the third set Winnipeg prooved to be too much for Calgary as timely kills by Richard Wiebe and Ben Schellenberg gave the Wesmen a 25-13 third set victory. The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 11-8 while the Dinos fall to 4-15. The two teams will conclude their regular seasons with a match at the Duckworth Centre beginning at 3:00 p.m.

WESMEN 60 Manitoba 55
The Wesmen avenged Thursday's loss by defeating the Manitoba Bisons 60-55 in front of 1500 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Saturday evening. The game was close midway thru the first half with both teams at 14-14 at the tem minute mark. The Bison's connected on 5-of-8 from three point territory in the first half. Despite numerous turnovers the Wesmen only trailed 35-31 at halftime. In the second half both teams struggled on offence but the Wesmen stepped up their defensive play by allowing the Bisons to conect on 8-of-32 shots in the second half. Uzo Asagwara and Mel Talastas, who was honored before the game as she played her last regular season home game as a Wesmen, sparked the team in second half. Asagwara scored 12 points, while Talastas scored eight points, including a big three point basket with just over two minutes to play. Asagwra scored a game high 27 points to lead the Wesmen. Rachel Hart led the Bisons with 14 points. Hart and Talastas were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game. The game was the last regular season game for both teams. The Wesmen finish first in the Great Plains Division with a 14-6 record, while the Bisons finish second at 11-9.

WESMEN 86 Manitoba 76
One player stole the show as the Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 86-76 Saturday night in front of 2000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. Dan Shynkaryk scored a career high 39 points, including 29 in the second half to pace the Wesmen to victory. Winnipeg came storming out of the gate early on as they built a 20-8 lead just four minutes into the game. Manitoba settled down and went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 20-14. The Wesmen struggled with their shooting towards the end of the half and the Bisons went on a 10-2 run to take a 41-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half Winnipeg chipped away at the lead and took a 43-42 lead two and half minutes into the second half. At this point on it was the Dan Shynkaryk show as he continued to hit shot after shot. The Wesmen had a 63-55 lead at the midway point of the half and never looked back from that point on. Jon Lundgren led the Bisons with 32 points. Shynkaryk and Lundgren were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game. The Wesmen finish the regular season with a 8-12 record and will head to Brandon to face the Bobcats in the first round of the playoffs beginning Friday night. The Bisons finish the season with a record of 4-16.

The Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wemen 3-2 (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 15-12) in a highly entertaining match Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. Lauren Perry led the Dinos with 16 kills and 19 digs, while Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with 15 kills. The first was dominated by Calgary as they raced out to leads of 8-5 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. At the end of the set Calgary won five of the last six points to take the first set 25-16. In the second set Winnipeg had the early lead but Calgary went on a 7-0 run to make the score 10-7. Calgary had momentum on their side as they won the second set 25-20. The Wesmen settled down in set number three and had leads of 8-5 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Calgary went on to score four straight points after the timeout, but the Wesmen stood their ground winning the set 25-22. In the fourth set both teams matched each other point for point with Clagary holding slim leads of 8-7 and 16-15 at the timeouts. The Dinos had a chance to close out the match leading 24-23 but Marlee Bragg of the Wesmen came thru with two clutch plays to give the Wesmen a 26-24 set victory. The Dinos raced out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set only to see Winnipeg close the gap to 8-5 at the timeout. Calgary maintained their composure and won the deciding set 15-12. The Wesmen conclude the regular season with a 12-8 record and the Dinos improve to 14-6. The Wesmen will head west to UBC to face the T-Birds in the first round of the Canada West playoffs.

The Winnipeg Wesmen continued their strong play as they defeated the Calgary Dinos 3-1 (25-9, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14) Sunday afternoon in the last match regular season match for both teams. Fifth year middle Jarrod Small led the Wesmen with 14 kills and Steve Gotch led Calgary with 10 kills. The Wesmen had no trouble in the first set winning 25-9 and once again in winning the second set 25-13. The Dinos made adjustments in the third set and took advantage of some Wesmen errors to win the set 25-23. In the fourth set Winnipeg carried the play and played error free as they won the set 25-14. The Wesmen finish the regular season with a record of 12-8 and will now head to Trinity Western University to face the Spartans in the first round of the Canada West playoffs. The Dinos finish their 2005-2006 season with a disappointing 4-16 record.
