ASAGWARA LEADS WESMEN TO GAME ONE VICTORY
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened the Great Plains Championship series with a dramatic 71-70 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Fourth year guard Uzo Asagwara scored a game high 38 points to carry the Wesmen to victory. The Wesmen came out of the gate very strong opening up a 24-9 lead just before the midway point of the first half. The Bisons did not quit as they went on a 17-4 run to close the gap to 28-26 in the Wesmen's favour. The game remained tight for the final minutes of the first half, as the score was tied 34-34 at the half. Asagwara had 17 points in the first half. In the second half the Bisons got the early jump and had the lead until the 8:00 mark of the half. The teams exchanged baskets and manitoba was able to pull even at 62-62 with four and a half minutes to play. After Manitoba was able to pull to within a point, Asagwara drained a long three pointer with two and a half minutes left to give the Wesmen a 68-64 lead. The game came down to a wild final minute. Sarah Holder connected on 1-of-2 shots fom the line to give the Bisons a 70-69 lead with 15 seconds left. Fifth year guard and team spark plug Melanie Talastas sank a free throw with eight seconds left to tie the score at 70-70 and then made a huge defensive play stripping the ball from the Bison defender and giving Uzo Asagwara a chance to win the game, which she did sinking 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds to play. Nicki Schutz had a strong game under the boards for Winnipeg grabbibng a game high 13 rebounds. The Bisons were led by Sarah Holder's 18 points and Melanie Schlichter's 16 points. The two teams will meet in game two of the series Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

WESMEN 68 Manitoba 64 (Wpg wins best of three series 2-0)
WESMEN SWEEP BISONS TO EARN SPOT IN CANADA WEST FINAL FOUR
The Winnipeg Wesmen are headed to the Canada West Final Four thanks to a 68-64 game two victory over the Manitoba Bisons Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen completed the two game sweep with a total team effort which was needed as the Bisons payed special attention to Uzo Asagwara who scortched the Bisons for 38 points in game one. Stefanie Timmersman had a solid game leading the Wesmen with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Holder led the Bisons with a game high 23 points. The game got off to a slow start as both teams were very cautious not to make any critical errors. The Bisons jumped out to a 18-12 lead at the midway point of the first half. A few minutes later Asagwara hit a big three pointer to give the Wesmen their first lead since the opening basket at 27-26. The Bisons took a slim 35-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half the Bisons carried the play for much of the half keeping the Wesmen off guard until the final two minutes when the Wesmen tied the score at 59-59. The Bisons grabbed a two point lead only to see that disapppear with just over one minute left as Timmersman sank two free throws to tie the score at 61-61. Great players make great plays and with 45 seconds to play Asagwara finished off a three point play to give the Wesmen a 64-61 lead. Asagwara once again was under the spotlight as she sank two free throws with 22 seconds left to give the Wesmen a five point advantage. sarah Holder hit a big three point shot to pull the Bisons to within two points but Jenny Ezirim hit two free throws with eight seconds left to clinch the series. The Wesmen will now head to the Canada West Final Four on March 3-4 where three of the top four teams will head to the CIS Nationals.

WESMEN 86 Regina 79 (Wpg leads best of three series 1-0)
OPALKO, NASAJPOUR LEAD WESMEN TO GAME ONE VICTORY
The Wesmen Men's team defeated the Regina Cougars 86-79 in the opening game of the Great Plains divisional final Friday night in Regina. Erfan Nasajpour and Matt Opalko led the way scoring 25 points each. The Wesmen had a 45-41 halftime lead. The Wesmen were shooting the lights out as they connected on 55% of the their shots from the field including an amazing 62% in the second half where they outscored the Cougars 41-38. Game two of the best of three series will be played saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN 73 Regina 86 (best of three series tied 1-1)
COUGARS BEAT WESMEN TO FORCE GAME THREE
The Regina Cougars defeated the Wesmen 86-73 in game two of the Great Plains Division Final Saturday night in Regina. The victory by the Cougars forces a third and deciding game Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The Wesmen fell behind early on as they trailed 43-34 at halftime. Winnipeg only connected on 36% of their shots from the field in the first half. The team did improve to 53% shooting in the second half. The Wesmen had troubles from the three point range connecting on 1-of-9 shots. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 25 points.

WESMEN SEASON ENDS WITH GAME THREE LOSS TO REGINA
Sunday, February 26, 2006 - The Winnipeg Wesmen saw there season come to an end Sunday afternoon in Regina. The Regina Cougars defeated the Wesmen 94-71 in game three of the Great Plains Division Final. The Cougars had control of the game early on as they held a 47-33 lead at halftime. The second half belonged to the Cougars as they held off the Wesmen for the series clinching victory. Erfan Nasajpour was once again the best Wesmen finishing with a team high 27 points. The Wesmen once again struggled in the three point territory only connecting on 2-of-13 attempts (15%).
