WESMEN OVERPOWER BISONS IN HOME OPENER

nicola dirksThe Winnipeg Wesmen got off to a slow start but got stronger as the match went on as they defeated their cross town rivals Manitoba Bisons 3-1 in front of 700 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Friday evening. In the first set the Wesmen trailed 8-4 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts before going on a 17-5 run to win the first set 25-21. The Bisons got even in the second set winning 25-17, therefore evening out the match at 1-1. The Wesmen gained momentum in set number three, led by the strong play of Nicola Dirks and Kaitlyn Jackson as they both helped keep the Bisons off balance. The Wesmen took the third set 25-17. The fourth set was a close one with the Wesmen holding slim 8-7 and 16-15 leads at the timeouts. The Wesmen took advantage of some Bison errors and continued their strong play winning the fourth set 25-20. Nicola Dirks was a force on this evening finishing with 14 kills and 15 digs. First year sensation Marlee Bragg had 12 kills and 19 digs. The 3-0 Wesmen will look for the sweep as they face the Bisons Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN BEAT BISONS IN GRUELING MATCH

christa desrochersThe Winnipeg Wesmen came out on top with a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. It seemed like the Wesmen would have their way with the Bisons as they won the first set rather easily, 25-16. In the second set the Bisons turned the table as they jumped out to a 8-2 lead at the technical timeout. The Bisons kept the pressure on the Wesmen as they went on to win the second set 25-17. In set number three the Wesmen had a 16-11 lead at the second technical time out and seemed to be on their way to capturing the set. The Bisons kept on fighting and pulled to within two points until the Wesmen narrowly won the set 25-22. The Bisons were no match for the Wesmen in set number four as they built a 16-5 lead on their way to winning the set 25-19 and evening out the match at 2 games a piece. The fifth and deciding set was a battle with both teams exchanging points. The Bisons led 14-13 and were at match point until the Wesmen stormed back scoring four out of the last five points to take the fifth set 17-15. Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen attack with 22 kills. Kristin Brisebois had 13 kills in the win. Fourth year setter Christa Desrochers had a strong match with 59 assists and 15 digs. The win improves the Wesmen's record to 4-0.

WESMEN ROLL OVER BOBCATS WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN

uzo asagwaraThe Wesmen put Thursday's narrow victory behind them and came focused and possessed as they trounced the Brandon Bobcats 75-52 in front of 1700 fans at the Duckworth Centre Saturday evening. The team who beat the inexpereinced Bobcats by three points Thursday night in Brandon came out on fire and built a 34-23 lead at halftime. In the second half the Wesmen connected on 51% of their shots from the field and used five three pointers to score 41 points in the half and cruise to the victory. Fourth year guard Uzo Asagwara once again led the Wesmen with 21 points, including 2 of 4 from beyond the three-point line. Stefanie Timmersman had 14 points and seven assists for the Wesmen, who improve their record to 4-0. The Wesmen will battle the Regina Cougars next weekend at the Duckworth Centre.

NASAJPOUR LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER BRANDON

erfan nasajpourThe heart and soul of the Wesmen put everything on the line this game. Super guard Erfan Nasajpour scored 27 points to lead the Wesmen to a 80-67 victory over the Brandon Bobcats in front of 2000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. Nasajpour scored 15 points in the second half but none was bigger then a three point basket which gave the Wesmen a seven point lead at 58-51 with turned the momentum of the game around. The game was a close one at halftime with the Wesmen holding on to a 34-29 lead. The difference in this game came down to free-throw shooting. The Bobcats were a horrible 8-of-24 from the line, while the Wesmen were 17-of-18 from the charity stripe. Dan Shynkaryk before fouling out, scored a double-double for the third consecutve game as he finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 3-1. The team will host the tough Regina Cougars in a weekend series at the Duckworth Centre.
