WESMEN 55 Victoria 54WESMEN SURVIVE SCARE TO DEFEAT VIKES
The Wesmen women's team can take this victory and run. The Wesmen escaped with a narrow 55-54 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Winnipeg had complete control of the game at halftime leading by a score of 30-17 at halftime. The second half was a completely different story. The Wesmen carried the play and built a 20 point lead at 51-31 with about ten minutes left to play in the game. Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay was able to rest her starters and give her bench some playing time, but that is when the Vikes chipped away at the Wesmen lead. Victoria drained back-back three pointers to cut the lead to 51-37. McKay inserted her starters back in the game but missed shots by the Wesmen and key baskets by the Vikes allowed Victoria to go on a 17-4 run to pull to within a point as time expired. McKay was dissapointed in seeing her team almost throw the game away. "We have to learn how to put teams away, I am dissapointed in the team today, hopefully they will learn from this", said McKay. Stefanie Timmersman led the Wesmen with 15 points, while Uzo Asagwara scored 14 points. The Wesmen victory improves their record to 6-1. The two teams will face each other once again Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
