WESMEN DEFEAT COUGARS TO REMAIN PERFECT

The Wesmen improved their Canada West regular season record to a perfect 5-0 as they defeated the Regina Cougars 76-66 at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen came out on fire in the first half shooting a blistering 57% from the field as they built a 42-32 halftime lead over the Cougars. In the second half the Wesmen held the lead but saw the Cougars cut into the lead on numerous occassions. The game was not sealed until the final two minutes when third year forward Stefanie Timmersman made two big plays. Timmersman scored a big basket with one and a half minutes to go as she was fouled on the play and was able to finish the three point play which gave the Wesmen a 72-65 lead. The co-captain of the Wesmen put the game away with a big block with 30 seconds to play to give the Wesmen the victory. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 24 points. Timmersman, who was celebrating her 21st birthday, scored 20 points. First year guard Randie Gibson came alive in the second half scoring 10 points. The Wesmen and Cougars will do battle agin Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:15 p.m. and will be broadcast on 1290 CFRW starting with the pre-game show at 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN DROP CLOSE ONE TO COUGARS

The Wesmen dropped a 73-67 decision to the Regina Cougars Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen seemed to have control of the game in the first half as they held a 33-30 lead at halftime. In the second half the Wesmen struggled as they shot 35% from the field and only 57% from the free-throw line. The Wesmen got a big three point play from Ryan Roper to make the score 64-61 halfway thru the final period. That is when things fell apart for the team as guard Erfan Nasajpour picked up his fifth foul and had to leave the game with six minutes to play. After Nasajpour left the Cougars went on a 10-3 run to seal the victory. The loss overshadowed the play of Dan Shynkaryk who finished with a game high 26 points. The two teams will face each other Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN LOSE TO COUGARS AT THE BUZZER

The Winnipeg Wesmen were beaten 73-72 by the Regina Cougars on a three point shot as time expired in a thrilling contest at the Duckworth Centre Saturday evening in front of 1250 spectators. Megan Cherkas of the Cougars took an inbound pass and drained a three pointer to give the Cougars the victory. The victory by the Cougars overshadowed an outstanding performance by third year forward Stefanie Timmersman. Timmersman finished with a career high 36 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line. The Wesmen were behind early in the contest as they trailed 11-2 before the game was four minutes old. The Cougars continued to lead the Wesmen by double digits until the team went on a 9-3 run to close the gap to 34-33 at halftime. In the second half both teams battled tooth and nail with the Wesmen holding on to a 72-67 lead with just over a minute left. The Cougars drained a three pointer with thirty seconds to play to cut the Wesmen lead to 72-70. The loss by the Wesmen is their first in the regular season as there record now stands at 5-1. The team will host the University of Victoria in a weekend series beginning next Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN LOSE OVERTIME THRILLER TO COUGARS

The Wesmen men's basketball team fought all game and came up just short. The Wesmen were defeated in overtime 88-85 by the Regina Cougars in front of 1350 screaming fans at the Duckworth Centre Saturday evening. The Wesmen trailed by as much as ten points in the first half , but went on a 14-4 run to close the gap. Ryan Roper drained a big three point shot in the closing moments of the first half to give the Wesmen a slim 37-36 halftime lead. In the second half the Wesmen maintained there lead for most of the half, only to see the Cougars battle back. The Wesmen had a 73-71 lead when Erfan Nasajpour, who had a game high 29 points nailed a three point shot with 1:10 to play to give the Wesmen a 76-71 lead. The Cougars fought back and scored five quick points to send the game into overtime. In overtime the Cougars outscored the Wesmen 12-9 to gain the slim victory. The loss by the Wesmen evens out their record at 3-3. The Victoria Vikes will be the next opponent for the Wesmen in a weekend series starting next Friday night at the Duckworth.
