WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA  PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Nicola Dirks, women’s volleyball – Nicola, a fifth year left side and team captain led the Wesmen with 45 kills (15 kpg) in the three matches she played at this past weekend’s Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge.

Congratulations to former Wesmen basketball great Uzoma Asagwara who was recently named to the 12 member final roster for the Senior Women’s National Team that will be competing at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification that runs from September 26  -30th in Valdivia, Chile.

Season passes for Wesmen Basketball and Volleyball Home games/matches are now available at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre. The price is $50.00 which will entitle you to attend all regular season Wesmen home games for both sports. For more information please call (204) 786-9349.

On Friday, September 28, 2007, you have two reasons to be at the Duckworth Centre. First one lucky team will win a set of volleyball uniforms, compliments of Saxon Athletics, Team Outfitters and the University of Winnipeg! The second is a chance to have your team celebrate with the Wesmen as they present championship rings and raise the banner for winning the CIS National Championship. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen would like your team to join us on Friday September 28, 2007 for “Uniform Give-Away Night”.  That night the Wesmen Men’s Volleyball Team hosts the University of Regina Cougars.  Game time is 7:00 p.m. Free admission is available by having your team wear their uniform tops or any red top. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Women’s team took part in the eleven team field at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge this past weekend at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen finished with an even record of 2-2, finishing in sixth place. On Friday the team opened up the tournament with a convincing 3-0 (28-26, 25-13, 25-22) win over Toronto. Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 16 kills. The team made it two wins in a row on Saturday with an impressive 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) win against Simon Fraser. Dirks led the team with 10 kills and Dayna Kiesman added seven kills. On Sunday the team played two matches and suffered two defeats. The Regina Cougars defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 25-9) in the morning draw and the defending National Champions, Alberta Pandas beat Winnipeg 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-10) in the afternoon draw. The team will head to Regina this weekend to take part in the University of Regina Invitational Tournament.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Larry McKay has set his roster for the upcoming 2007-08 season. The team will feature ten returning players from last season’s championship team and five talented first year players, who will be looking to make an impact this season. The team will see its first action this weekend in a pair of pre season matches against the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday night. Match time both nights is 7:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay had a first hand look at her team at last week’s intersquad game. This year’s team is hard working and very athletic. The team is preparing for their first pre season action which will take place at the BOB FM Shootout from October 5-7, 2007 at the Duckworth Centre.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The team participated in the annual intersquad game last Wednesday at the Duckworth Centre. Head Coach Dave Crook has assembled a very quick, athletic and talented team that will turn some heads this coming season. The team is preparing for their first pre-season action at the Pembina Chrysler Invitational which will take place on October 12-13, 2007 at the Duckworth Centre.
